Spectacle case from an empty shampoo bottle ... a bit of recycling and hand sewing ...

in needleworkmonday •  6 years ago  (edited)

(I have added this section of the finished project for the thumbnail)

I have been quite busy this past week : finishing the squirrel, doing a bit of embroidery and sewing and upcycling things. Today I will show you one of the projects I've been working on : a spectacle case using an empty shampoo bottle.

1 - The process starts with a humble empty shampoo bottle. The decision is always between recycling and throwing, but in this case the marks on the back of the bottle tell you the inevitable: it can't be recycled ! I do feel guilty about it as I don't even use this shampoo - it's one of my daughters who uses it, but as the 'recycling officer' at home I deal with the recycling every week and try to encourage more thought on purchases.

I had two possible bottles to choose from. I went for this one because I needed to line it and wanted to make sure there would still be enough space for a pair of glasses and a cloth to clean the glasses.

2 - At this point, I would suggest making a line either with pen or a Sharpie pen so when you cut you follow a straight line. As always my creative flow took over and my bottle was a bit crooked, but I used scissors afterwards.

3 - Next, I used a craft knife to cut off the neck and lid :

The photos above show two bottles but for the project I chose one. I am including the two photos because the second one looks clearer.

This process was easy with a craft knife. You are left with a lid and top; I reckon the lid could be made into a button or something.

** Incidentally, @tahiaarq has already shown us how to recycle or upcycle a plastic bottle. In her post she used crochet to finish off the open end. She crocheted using plastic yarn and she had previously described the process on how to make it here.

4 - I washed my bottles thoroughly, but they were still quite perfumed. I found an old children's sweater that my friend had given me and cut off one sleeve - I will use the rest for other projects.

5 - Then I divided the cutoff sleeve in half and I had the lining and the cover for the bottle.

The main issue I had was the shape of the sleeve, I had to sew off the tapering so it was a tube of the same width.

6 - I sewed one end of the sleeve tube and inserted it into the bottle. I used a ruler to push it as far as it would go.

7 - I then repeated the process with the other half of the cutoff sleeve, that is I sewed one end but this time I turned it the right side out and put the bottle into it:

It was quite hard to stop everything from moving while I sewed the ends of the lining and the outside of the sleeve.

8 - I found an elastic band to use (thank you, @tinygalaxy) together with a button to help the pair of glasses stay safe inside.

I used pins to keep things together but clips (or even) clothes pegs would have been okay (the pins kept on coming off...).

9 - I used 'invisible' stitch to join the two bits of sleeve (lining and cover).

Everything was beginning to take shape in the photo above. One more photo ...

I was just saying to @marblely the other day how I tend to collect nice looking bottles. Unfortunately that's not just glass bottles, sometimes I also keep plastic bottles that have potential for some craft. Making this sort of useful item justifies my hoarding.

Thank you for reading !

I reckon the lid could be made into a button or something.

I was wondering what you would do with the lid! Guess you have your next article cut out for you :D

I find the colours used for plastic bottles are often really nice, eg purples and greens. I often wonder how I could make neat enough holes to cut through, @dollarsandsense. I guess a fine drill bit would do the job, but there would still be 'left-overs'...

lol, I just found one too... This needlework monday group is pretty tight-knit.....

wow !!!!! great idea!!!!! if he told me right away that the bottle inside the case, I probably would not have believed :))) you did a wonderful thing !!!

Thank you, @tali72. It's great to make things and re-using bits and pieces in the process.

That's such a cool upcycle project! I love it!!

Thank you @phoenixwren. It was a lot of fun to make it. I am keen to cut other bottles a bit shorter and even sideways to try out other possibilities in terms of shapes, eg coin purses and pencil cases :D

That's a great idea!

Very creative! And environment friendly too. Imagine you save that plastic from being just a waste to something useful. Good job! 😊👍

Thank you, @macoolette. It was quite a fun project to make and I reckon it would make a good present :D

You're welcome.

It does make a good present. And if you want, it can be art for business too. 😊

Uiiii I see a needle/hook case in the future :-DDD
But why are you posting this cool tutorial now, when I have stopped using shampoo bottles :-DDD ? I really love your idea and execution. With the thick fabric you have chosen, it is not only cute, but also padded very well (to keep glasses safe)

Thank you, @neumannsalva. The fabric is also surprising soft. I was careful because other types of material might be a bit scratchy...
Actually I was also thinking of keeping small scissors in a container like this.

uiuiiiii you were curated by @curie: congratulations <3 <3 This is so earned!

Thank you, @neumannsalva ! We all work very hard! :D

How do you even come up with ideas like this @cryptocariad ?
This looks so professional, I'd never tell it was made from a recycled shampoo bottle :))

Have you finished your squirrel yet? It seemed really cute :)

he he... yes, I have finished the squirrel @vliet ... I've entered it for a contest at the local village fair... I'm about to set off to collect it shortly :D
I just look at things and think, 'hmmm, that looks like...' and then I just go for it ...

I hope your squirrel won that contest! But if not, at least you got some steem for it :DD

That's a great way to look at things, very unusual. Looking forward to some more unique ideas from you @cryptocariad !

Thanks, @vliet... The squirrel came second which was great. It was 'beaten' by a cute crocheted rabbit, but I don't mind.
I really enjoyed the process of designing and making the squirrel. The steem will hopefully be enough to buy more yarn at some point... though by chance my friend gave me part of her surplus so I'm really happy about that :D

Oh dear, a squirrel and rabbit fight... must have been a nail biting experience! :DDD
Great to suddenly be gifted some yarn - must feel like Christmas in August :)

oh, no ... not a fight, @vliet ! crocheted beings don't fight :D

:DDD a competition then...

That's a clever idea @cryptocariad. You're so creative! 😁

Thank you, @gillianpearce 😁

Great idea and well done!

Thank you @muscara 😁

btw: There is a way of "hiding" a picture you want as a thumbnail but not as a first picture though I don't know whether it works on other frontends but Steemit. You nest several div class commands in each other and make the picture only 1 pixel big.

ödiv class="pull-right">
ödiv class="pull-right">
ödiv class="pull-right">
ödiv class="pull-right">

öhr/>

Just replace every ö with a < and delete every ä and it should give you the needleworkmonday graphic as a dot at the right side.

Wow, thank you very much for this @muscara :D I will try this next time.

Woah that is cool! Going to have to try this, what a helpful comment!

Great project! I love the ingenuity of the closer.

Thank you @steven-patrick... I was also quite pleased with that solution.

Hi @cryptocariad. This is very creative and very well explained. The fabric looks beautiful. Also encouraging recycling. Thank you for this idea.

You're very welcome @jicrochet. That fabric was really soft too as it had shrunk and felted a bit - not by me though :D

Wow you and your creativity! This is such a neat upcycle project! A shampoo bottle and an old sweater...who would’ve known those two would meet and create something so useful together?

Lol @

Making this sort of useful item justifies my hoarding.

So funny! 😂

Thanks so much for sharing!!

It's a pleasure, @needleworkmonday.

Do you hoard anything and find ways of explaining why you do ? (eg favourite leftover yarn ?)

Yep ya got me!! Leftover yarn is the #1 thing for sure! 😅

Cool idea @cryptocariad! I agree, these shampoo and conditioner bottles are still quite perfumed after you clean them. I like the fabric used, makes the case look really cosy for the specs. Yay to recycling, reusing and repurposing! :)

Thank you @marblely ! I've got lots of bits and pieces of fabric I can use... yay for 'hoarding' :D

Yay! Congrats on your curie vote @cryptocariad! :)

Thanks, @marblely :D

You like know everybody. Your needlework group is pretty tight-knit, isn't it. lol

And we do learn a lot from each other, @coinsandchains ...

That is one of my most favorite things about steemit, I learn tons just being here.

Hehe, yes we are!! :) It is such a happy community with so much loveee!!

That is really creative of you! An empty shampoo bottle is something I would have thrown away without thinking twice, but well you made good out of something that might have appeared "useless", that sure is amazing.

It looks really nice and well made! I love the patterns on the sweater sleeves you used.

Thank you, @audreybits. The jumper still looked really nice although it had shrunk and felted somewhat which would make it quite nice for a hat or mittens :D

Hahah! So you still have plans for the jumper? That's just awesome! I thought you were done with it. I look forward to seeing what you make out of it.

I really like the fabric you've used - perfect scale and pattern. Lovely idea, too. I often need small receptacles for bits and pieces. These would make lovely small gifts or items for fundraisers. Perfect for a craft circle 😊 Congratulations on your @curie vote - well deserved!

Thank you, @shanibeer. I shall spend the curie wisely :D
I think there's a lot of mileage in reusing this sort of bottle. The plastic is not normally recyclable if you look at the symbol on the back, but the bottles are still strong. It's also got the potential as a stash buster because the lining could be a piece of cotton and the right side fabric, crocheted or knitted ...

This is such a brilliantly creative idea, and a fab way around using up your non-recyclables (great idea for Christmas gifts for all your glasses-wearing friends too ;) ) I love the idea of using old kiddies jumpers too- they often come in such great patterns and colours... hmm the possibilities.

Awesome post- I think I'll be having a go at this for my pair of sunnies I keep in the car! Brilliant photography too by the way. E x

Thank you, @eveningart ! It would be great to have a look at your creations... Have a look at
@needleworkmonday and see if you can join us too :D

Excellent, very useful and practical for children. regards

Thank you, @evero ! Are you keen on crafts ? It would be great if you could give it a go and share photos with us :D

haha! I love these kinds of projects from everyday items that turn into super cool and practical item! This is so neat and clever. I take it you are a master crafts person who does this type of thing all the time?
and you're working on a squirrel? lol. great post cryptocariad!

Thanks, @janton... I'm not a 'master crafts person'; I just have a go and sometimes things work out. Incidentally, the squirrel's finished :D

haha! ok well this time it worked out really well and now I gotta go see if you posted about the squirrel!

He's everywhere, you better get you a glasses case, you are going to need a stronger pair with all of this screen time you are getting. lol

haha! hey if I'm everywhere I guess that means you are too!

I'm just riding your shirt tails. I'm too far behind this week to get anywhere close to where I wanted to. Of course I never know when to give up.... lol

yeah who needs sleep! that's for you not me, I gotta have sleep! I'm not where I want with the curie things but I did ok. did you post this week? I don't want to miss anything.

I've not posted since Monday/Tuesday, it's been busy.

Wow! You are hard-core! I am the worst recycler ever. I've lived so many places and never figure out how to prepare the trash for the location before it goes out the door. I'm in SE Asia where it feels impossible to make a dent now anyway.

When I was in Bangkok they double and triple bag everything and you can't stop them unless you want to fight all day in another language. This is a big shock to all westerners who go there. But people come out at night to go through your trash to get what they can and seemed to be very efficient. Now in Malaysia the trash where I live is under lock and key, so I am not sure what happens after that.

It's so interesting to hear other realities,@fitinfun. I guess there may be a different reality just round the corner or in the countryside.
We used to live in a city and there was an incinerator there, but we still took some stuff to recycling banks, namely paper and cardboard, bottles and cans. Here in Wales there's a recycling centre in the town and you can even take broken electric gadgets and furniture there - we have rescued some good skeleton chairs which I'm hoping to refurbish when my back's better :D

@awesome upcycle project @cryptocariad! Looks very simple but extremely useful😍 I will be keep my shampoo bottle from now on❤️

he he... and you know there's a Steemian that goes by that first name :D
Please share photos if you upcycle/recycle and shampoo bottles, @naomipangolin - sadly, some of the bottle does get thrown but at least half will get a new lease of life ❤️

That is actually class. I wear glasses so i've been through all the struggles. it would be especially handy for some of my sunglasses as they always seem to be a bit too big for a regular case.
It's always nice to see a person who can re purpose something into a new and useful item. It's a skill really as you see something that other people can't. Nicely done.

Thank you very much for your kind words, @niallon11.
I hope you can make some cases for your glasses. The shampoo bottles are really tough and I'm hoping we can come up with a use for the lids...

I will have to give it a go anyway. Whether I do it well or not is an entirely different matter.

I can't believe I missed this post. This is a lovely project @Cryptocariad I like the pattern you've chosen. For the lids you could always use them to germinate seedlings

Thank you and, yes, that's a very good idea, @gmatthe2.

My gosh! Indeed you are a crafty and recycler merge into one!.. its so easy for you to create things from stuff that seems to be of no use anymore..

How i wish i had the time to do something like this..

Posted using Partiko Android

Thank you, @maquemali. My interest comes from questioning my use of plastics (we take it for granted). I see so many of our day-to-day things packaged in beautiful single use / non-refillable bottles and I as collect the rubbish that can be recycled at home, I see things and reflect on our ecological footprint.
The craftiness comes from constantly stopping myself from buying things so I make them out of what I've got (or rescue) :D

LOL, yay for hoarding.... I just wish I could convince my wife of that... lol.
That does look rather fetching, and relatively simple to make. A pretty good upcycle.

Thanks, @coinsandchains - it was great to see the final result; win a prize and then the curie :D

I bet it was, and you deserved it. congrats

Ok, where's the squirrel post everyone is talking about?

Here's the direct link to the finished squirrel, @coinsandchains :

https://steemit.com/creative/@cryptocariad/finished-crocheted-squirrel-also-a-winner

You can see a couple of other links about its creation process from there :D

Thank you for the link. That looked like a lot of work. It also gave me an idea for something for a friend of mine.

I'm curious now, @coinsandchains :D
