Needleworkmonday- Monarch Scarf progress

in needleworkmonday •  6 years ago

Watched Bohemian Rhapsody on my flight last Friday and knitted while I watched. The movie was ok, not bad but not as amazing as it had been talked up as being.
It was long enough that I made good progress on my Monarch butterfly colored scarf. :)

I am happy with the color and general randomness of the basket weave, I gave up on counting and just switch whenever it looks like it is the right number of rows. I hope to get a chance to finish it on Friday when I fly home.

This week I am in Chicago teaching a class and working too hard. Such is life in my business. 😁

I read a fun book on my flights yesterday. It is Putting the Fun in Funeral and by my friend Diana Pharoah Francis. She knits and geocaches and writes fun books with strong female characters who don't put up with anything from anyone.

The best way to describe the book is Urban Fantasy. Someone horrible is dead, her daughter suspected of the murder, and all the daughter wants to do is throw the tackiest funeral possible. Except then tall dark and handsome shows up to save her from something he can't tell her about. And it goes downhill from there.

I think one of her strongest writing skills is the witty banter her characters have. It isn't realistic or close to how any conversations I have ever had actually went, but it is fun to read. Very much like the characters were in a movie or tv show.

Happy needleworkmonday!

It is lovely to hear form you and to know that work hasn’t eaten you by now (is this saying also working in English?...hmmm) Your scarf looks good and the autumnal colors are gorgeous.
And thank you for the book hint. I love many of the urban fantasy books (only the one with love triangles get me gagging)... Do you have a good read account (where you have hopefully a huge list of books I should read 😂?)
But I have to admit I am not sure how to share profiles on Goodreads, as I only use it to keep track of my reading so that I do not read books several times without noticing (yeah... it happened, shame on me)
And how cool that you know an author!!!!

Work is definitely trying to eat me! I have barely been online at all. I haven't even been able to read all the Monday posts yet!.

I have met a bunch of authors due to various conventions we have attended. Most of them have been very nice. Diana is awesome to talk too and very cool.
My goodreads profile is-

I see we are connected now on Goodreads and have perused your books. So I will mention the following-
At MisCon next May 23-24-25, 2020 the guests of honor will be- Charlaine Harris, Jim Butcher, Patty Briggs. I have met Jim Butcher and Patty Briggs before as they came to this convention in years past. Diana Pharoah Francis is a regular attendee as well and is expected to be there. Past guests you may be familiar with are Brandon Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss, George RR Martin, Robin Hobb, and Steven Brust.

Yes, yes (jumping up and down) I found your book shelfs. I am already listing which I will start to read next 😁😁
And you are fortunate to live in the US, so that you have the possibility to meet all these authors ( I may be a bit envious) I am still a big fan of Rothfuss (although there seem to be a very negative mood on Goodreads against him - but I think a author is allowed to write as fast or slow as he wants). Steven Brust I do not know (or remember - I will check later) and Harris I only know through film. But the others authors are in my favourites.
Sometimes I feel a bit ashamed, that I read so much “easy” literature.... but I cannot stop, I am addicted 🤪
How was it to meet Butcher and Briggs... I guess there is always a slight risk that one do not like an artist as a person and that this could mirror back on their work/book...?

Butcher is very down to earth and genuinely nice, I liked him. He has a great sense of humor and seemed to enjoy hanging out with the other writers at the convention.
Briggs I only met in passing, she seems pretty nice as well. I was sad when her husband passed away, he was very nice to all the volunteers at the convention.

Oh noooo I didn’t knew her husband died. This is so sad.
I guess I am more a reader only :-D I never met an author of one of my favourite books.

Mike was a neat guy, he was a chemist and did a great panel at MisCon about casting Silver bullets one year. A totally smart and sweet guy. Her assistant Ann is really nice too, I talked to her about the art auction a little this year as she used to buy lots of art years ago and I am certain that she has more fantasy art than anyone else I know.
Remind me next May and I will try to get you something signed!
