#needleworkmonday :: Upcycling an old T-shirt πŸ‘• into an envelope βœ‰ pillowcase

in needleworkmonday β€’Β  6 years agoΒ  (edited)

Hello everyone!!

A happy Monday again and Happy #NeedleworkMonday!!

🌷🌸NeedleworkMonday is a beautiful community with passion for needlework, started and hosted by @crosheille and co-hosted by @crystalize πŸŒ·πŸ’—!

Last week, @needleworkmonday challenged us to its first Upcycle Challenge! and so here I am 😁. My first upcycle project is turning an old T-shirt into an envelope pillowcase.

Main.png

I have many old T-shirts, just sitting around, not doing anything because they either have holes, the neckline is gone, the T-shirt has shrunk (but rather, I have grown πŸ˜†) or for one reason or another. But among these T-shirts, I have some that I really, really like because they hold very sweet memories or I like the design on the T-shirt and these are T-shirts I would never, ever throw them away.

This particular T-shirt was one of the first gifts my brother bought for me, many, many years ago which I cherish very much and he got it for me because of this πŸ˜„:

Main2.png

Though, I don't think he got it because I am a good girl, maybe hoping that I would be one πŸ˜‚.

But I have since outgrown it and can no longer fit into it. The neckline has also gone out of shape and there are spots at some places too.

At the same time, I have a little pillow that needed a new case, so that I can wash one and use the other. And both of these fit pretty nicely together.

So, here are the steps:
(You can probably complete this within 30 minutes or less, it is really that easy ) 😊

1.png

(1) Roughly "measure" the pillow and the T-shirt by placing the pillow over the T-shirt.
(2) Make sure there is enough T-shirt to cover the pillow.

2.png

(3) To make the "envelope", you will need enough height to fold over the pillow. In this case, we will use the back neckline as the fold.
(4) Cut along the sides of the T-shirt, leaving about 1 inch for seam allowance (but we will just sew about 1cm from the edge).
(5) The cut piece. We will use the back of the T-shirt to "envelope" over the front of the T-shirt (that says Good Girl).
After sewing the pillowcase right sides facing, when we turn the pillowcase over, the "envelope" will be the "inserted" part of the pillowcase with Good Girl visible.
A pillowcase should fit snugly and if your T-shirt has a stretchy material, you can fit them just right.

3.png

(6) Use the ruler to draw out any odd looking sides.
(7) Trim off the excess and odd looking sides.
(8), (9) Hem the Good Girl edge.
T-shirts usually do not require hemming because the material does not fray but hemming the "Good Girl" edge is to give it structure, else the edge would be very flimsy.

4.png

(10) I chose to leave the back neckline intact because I need the length to fold the "envelope" and when I do that, I do not need to hem that edge 😁.
(11) "Measure" the pillow by placing it over the cut T-shirt, to make sure it would fit.

5.png

(12) Sew along the lines.

6.png

(13) Turn the pillowcase inside out.
(14) Press out the corners.
(15) Insert the pillow to check that it fits.

7.png

(16), (17), (18) Hey it fits! 😁

8.png

(19), (20), (21) You can add buttons. Here, I use the plastic snap buttons with the help of the Dritz Plastic Snap Fasterner Plier.
I love sewing tools and gadgets and if I can afford it, I will usually get them for the fun of it although some, I use them very rarely πŸ˜….

9.png

TA-DA!! Completed!! πŸ˜‰ Yay!

Great pillow case. I love the quick snaps - they come in so many colors and forms :)

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ

Thank you @muscara! Yes yes, so many colors and forms, I had to refrain myself from buying them all. Hehe. Sorry for the late reply. Was going to reply and then I keep getting the RC message.

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ

I am totally sure he bought you that shirt knowing you are a good girl. Upcyling is something i learnt a few weeks ago on steemit. You have done an admirable job here. I won't have thought of turning an old t-shirt into a pillowcase. You even gave detail about the whole process. I think this is a project i could embark on. You make it seem so easy.

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ

Aaww.. thank you @cheekah :) You are sweet. I didn't dare to ask him hehe. Yes yes, do try, it is fun to do and the best part is I get to keep the T-shirts that I like for a long while more :)

You did an awesome job on the pillow!!! So many steps and you recorded everything, this is a fabulous tutorial. But I am amazed how much is necessary to make a pillowcase... yours looks very neat and professional and the picture is placed perfectly (perhaps you will become an even better person while sleeping on the 'good girl' 😊)

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ

Hehe... thank you @neumannsalva 😊😘. It is actually quite easy with just 4 main steps (if you are not into precision 😁) :

  1. Cut the sides
  2. Fold the top to create the "envelope"
  3. Sew the sides and bottom
  4. Turn it inside out through the "envelope" opening
Hehe.. yah, I am thinking to lie on the blank side and keep looking at the "good girl" to get some "good girl energy", or lie on the "good girl" and let the "good girl energy" flow into me πŸ˜….

Hey you got a curie vote!!! congratulations, so earned <3
And with the pillow... you have to report if the energy transfer worked :-D

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ

Thank you!!! I think the energy transfer is working :D But I need to ask around first. Haha.

Oh, so you're living on this earth as what you put in your profile @marblely?
Me, I'm living on this unknown that I can't fully understand lol

My mind is limited to think so, I stop there.

What else would I say?

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ (edited)

Thank you @steemitboard!!

This is such a sentimental Upcycle!! The pillowcase is so cute! I think it’s so sweet that you didn’t want to throw out the t-shirt. I like how neat and crisp it looks and love the added snap button! I would have never thought about upcycling a t-shirt into a pillowcase!

Thanks for laying out the steps for us and thank you for entering the Upcycle Challenge!!! πŸ˜ƒ

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ

Thank you @crosheille! Hehe yah, I wanted to keep the T-shirt and now I get to keep it close to me every night! :) Steemit is back to business (I hope) :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! 😊

Congratulations on your @curie vote - that's wonderful, it's a lovely post, beautifully made. I like the snap buttons. I've just discovered a new haberdashery shop in town, I bet they have all sorts of gadgets in there. I have enough problems with stationery, now it will be sewing accessories.

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ

Thank you @shanibeer! Finally, I am able to comment again πŸ˜…. It has been a quiet past few days. Haha. Yes yes, snap buttons are cool. The only thing I find is that for the plier, it does take some strength to flatten the center of the buttons so that the buttons are able to snap shut properly.
Oh no.. a new haberdashery! Hehe.. I try to go just once or twice a year because each time I go, I will end up buying loads. Not good for my wallet at all πŸ˜….

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ

Lolz. This is great. And it's funny knowing I have been throwing old T-SHIRT when my pillow needed a new case. I appreciate the knowledge. I don't think I can make it perfectly but I will start somewhere

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ (edited)

Haha thank you @shemzy. Do give it a try or just stuff the pillow inside the T-shirt and you are done! Just that you will have the extra sleeves flapping at the sides but I think it should work too :)
Sorry I was not able to reply earlier. Hopefully Steemit has stabilized.

Thank you so much @needleworkmonday!! You are the best!! :)

Awww shucks!!! ☺️

It’s truly a pleasure~ 😘

My husband loves upcycling as well. We have so many t-shirts around as I don't like to throw them away. I feel emotional connection to them, lol. This is a great idea how to keep them at home and give them another role. It also looks quite easy so I should be able to create them. I like that you shared the step by step instructions with us as well. Very useful.

Thank you for sharing and congratulations on the curie vote!

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ

Thank you @delishtreats! Upcycling is really cool isn't it :) Ah yes yes, don't throw them away! I think there are many projects we can do with T-shirts, we just need to explore a bit. You can turn them into a blanket or a quilt cover maybe too if you have many :) Thank you for dropping by! Sorry I couldn't reply you earlier. Was stuck with the RC message.

Probably the best way to keep all fond memory all along. The gifted TShirt is now a pillow envelope what a best way to keep you bro love with you and so easily done without much effort...or you made it look simpler. Thanks for sharing

Thank you for dropping by @steemflow :) Yes, yes, I am really happy with this one. I get to hug the T-shirt every night :) And yes, it doesn't require much effort. Just cut here and there and sew here and there and it will be done :)

That is the best one could do with the home spare item....few day ago my daughter made abag using my old jeans. She just cut the legs part and sew it folding as both the side pockets use to keep things....creativity is getting new defination all the time....love to see all these out of the box thinking

Ooo that is nice. It is quite fulfilling to repurpose something that you are still keeping but no longer use to something that you will get to use some more :)

Yes indeed...getting use of old item in a new avatar is always delightful. Also it make maximum use of the resource and prevent wastages

howdy from Texas marblely! What an ingenious but simple idea! I love this because I really like alot of my tee shirts that have minor wearing defects but they could be utilized like you've done here, that's very cool! this is such a practical and useful video. Do you also upcycle other things or just tee shirts?

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ (edited)

Heya @janton! Thank you! Yes you can turn them into covers for many things :) I wished I made a video but I didn't. What video are you referring to? I try to upcycle where I can, T-shirts, pants, glass bottles, etc. But I do see many talented Steemians here do beautiful upcycle projects with pallets and skateboards and bed frames.

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ

haha! howdy back to ya marblely! I wrote that when i first got up and must have been thinking that it would make a good video or something I don't know! sorry that was my mind wandering I guess! lol.
I have seen some very innovative upcycle products on steemit that made me very impressed also.
Anyway great job on the post!

Okay, this is something my girlfriend would like. She likes stuffs like this, sewing and crotcheting. You have a naughty brother, i did something similar for my sister a few months ago. This is an awesome way to keep memories. A fantastic job here dear.

Β  Β· Β 6 years agoΒ

Hey @barakexpansion, cool! Is she on steemit? We β€˜get together’ every monday for #needleworkmonday to share any project we are working on that involves needles :) She should come join us :)
Hehe yah but I love him. He is the best brother any sister can wish for, in my opinion :) thanks for dropping by! Wishing you a good sunday there!
