Needlework Monday - Grandma's Quilts

in needleworkmonday •  7 years ago

Today I am going to show off not my work, but my late grandma's, who was amazing at pretty much any art or craft she laid her hands to. These are the quilts that I have, that she made: she made dozens more, dispersed among various family members!

Tulips, which was both of our favorite flowers. :)

Grandma dated her quilts, so this one was made in 2005.

Sunbonnet Sue, which I can't spread out for you right now because Yuan has claimed it for his nap. 😄

The blue and red squares one I have had since I was a kid in the 80s. Actually I don't even know if it was given to me specifically, or my parents - but it ended up on my bed, because I've always been one to sleep under a mountain of them. No date on this one.

This one also is from my childhood in the 80s, and it was always mine. I believe my sister had a matching one too. It used to have yarn - like embroidery knots? - on it throughout, but those wore out long ago. I need to make some repairs as the side as opened at one end. My sewing repair list is always a mile long! You can see some wear on Sunbonnet Sue as well, but I'm not sure how to fix that, as it's more a matter of a couple of the fabrics wearing out.

I am trying my hand at my first quilt ever, a baby quilt - and I feel a bit overwhelmed! I have a new appreciation for this work. Wish me luck!

Happy needlework Monday!

I LOVE your grandma's quilts!! They are beautiful!! She had quite the gift, wow. I can't decide which one I like the best :) I've been intending to make a Sunbonnet Sue quilt for my parents, so it was delightful to see that one especially.

I'm so glad you made a post of her quilts! And how nice that you have them to remember her by <3

Thank you! Good luck making your Sunbonnet Sue! 💙

Ermegerd! You are in quilt heaven! I, too, had a grandma that made sunbonnet quilts. I uses that thing so much that it literally fell apart. It's interesting now, to think of what I would give to have a delightful cotton quilt again. You G-Ma was a pro! Thanks for sharing this.

She really was a pro! Thanks for reading! :) I hope you can get another quilt someday!

It is like she is there everyrime you snuggle up. How lovely 💗 one day I aim to do this for my family.

Do share with us here if you do! 💙

I am starting on my first one. Hopefully I will have some time to work on it and share soon.

I can see where you inherited your artistic abilities. Wow those are some beautiful quilts. It is so much more than just a quilt. So many memories of them. That is so great that she put the date on them like that. You can easily pull up memories of her now that she is gone (but still watching over you) I wish my grandmother had thought to add the date and sign them. I would never part with my quilts, such a huge part of my life. You are blessed to have so many. Best of luck with the baby quilt, I know you can do it. : )

Thank you so much. Yeah ... I think of them like hugs from Grandma. 😊

I LOVE quilts!! Thanks so much for sharing these. So amazing what your grandmother did and passed along to others. It is a labor of love, that's for sure! The hexie quilt is awesome and so is the Sunbonnet SUE!!! I always wanted one of those but didn't get one! I made a hexie quilt using triangles and it was torture. That is a true hexie that is handsewn. WOW!!! Thanks for sharing and I hope your quilt comes along well.

Thanks so much! I treasure my quilts. 😊 I'd love to see your triangle hexie quilt!
My mom inherited one after grandma passed, of one she had made a throw size quilt out of GRANDPA'S OLD TIES. My grandma was awesome. 💚

Wow, that's awesome! I'd love to see one made out of ties. There are so many ideas out there. My husband wants me to make him one out of different squares of jeans. I'm afraid my machine won't be able to quilt it together because it will be too thick! Here is Grandma's Hexagon Quilt. :)

Blood, sweat, and tears indeed! That's amazing! 😮
I have been saving old torn jeans to make a new papasan cushion with, but I'm not sure if my machine will do it, either. I bought special needles after breaking one on denim before, but haven't tested them out!

When I was child my mom made a quilt by sewing art of wonderful flower on a quilt after seen your post I missing my mom

I'm sorry about missing your mom. I miss my grandma too. 💛

These quilts are very lovely. Good luck on your 1st attempt. 😄 My 1st attempt was a pillow for home ec. I got a good grade, but as soon as I washed it, it fell apart. Still trying to get it right. 😁
