Observation:
Back in the days of movie rental stores (though these days were dying out when I was starting to drive) I wouldn't hesitate to swing by the store and spend five bucks on a couple of movies.
Today, if I can't watch a movie for free on a streaming service, I just don't watch it. In a world of streaming services you already pay for, it seems unreasonable to pay 2.99 for a movie when so many others are free.
And I have a lot of discipline about this. I almost never break down and pay the little Amazon fee. I always push it out of my mind and watch something else.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that in a real-world sense, I actually have less variety now than I did back in the old days.
In the old days, I'd have taken a drive to the movie rental store with every movie in existence (sometimes you had to try more than one store, the hunt was half the fun) and I wouldn't hesitate to throw down a few bucks on any movie I wanted. These days, I'm looking right at the movie I want to rent on Amazon Prime, but for all the convenience in the world, I'm not gonna get it. No sir. Already pay for loads of free movies on Amazon every month so I'm not getting this one.
(Man, you're only in this pickle because of unnecessary restrictions you put on yourself).
Awe come on. You have to put those restrictions on yourself or you'll get addicted to blowing money on foolish things.
So now I'm sitting here, missing Blockbuster. Missing the thrill of tracking down a good movie and actually renting it. It was a better time.
