Dirty John (netflix): reasonably good show

I was recommended this series by a friend because he thought that it kind of mirrored his life but in a far more devious way. So far I find the show very entertaining (i'm 3 episodes in.)

The series is based on real-life although in the credits they do indicate that a lot of what is stated is fiction and while I appreciate true-crime stories I do like that they have been forthcoming with admitting that they are embellishing a bit. It was annoying to me that the series Fargo went on a massive advertisement campaign about how the stories were completely true, just the names have been changed, only for us to find out later that it was all a bunch of completely made up B.S.

The story is told primarily from the perspective of Debra Newell who is a wealthy and extremely successful interior designer who has managed to not succeed in love. After her 4th marriage she has all but given up but then meets a charming and good-looking John Meehan (Eric Bana) who after a certain amount of courtship where they genuinely appear to be perfect for one-another begin a live-in relationship.

While it hasn't been entirely revealed to me yet, John is not who he says he is and I don't want to reveal anything that could be too much a spoiler because the series does a great job of giving us clues but not doing a big reveal.

Debra's daughters do not approve of her involvement with John and at first this just appears as though they are being whiny brats but as the situation evolves we, the audience, start to identify with their notions of not trusting him more and more.

I was particularly happy to see Julia Garner in the cast as she was the highlight of Ozark and I personally believe that she is a real up-and-comer to watch because she is going to do great things. I can't single her out as being the "best" in this series thus far (the way I could with Ozark) because the rest of the cast are pretty amazing in their own parts.

This short trailer reveals a lot more that could be considered spoilers than what I have written, so if you tend to take me at my word, you might want to skip it.

Netflix has to work pretty hard to hold my attention since it is so easy to just abandon a series and move on to another one whenever the one you are working on starts to lull. While it may be too early to call it officially, i am 3 episodes in and want to keep going but I have to work and go and buy groceries and stuff. Overall, i would say so far this is one of the better series on Netflix at the moment.

Ah, I never knew that about Fargo.

I am one episode in on this show and found it quite okay. Post the pilot, I moved onto "The Umbrella Academy" which I enjoyed maybe because it was not just one of your usual "superhero" show. I am actually finishing up S2 of Ozark(the part where Mason kidnaps Wendy), once done should probably continue with this.

i started to have my suspicions when Billy Bob's character was somehow able to become a dentist in a few months in order to earn the trust of a mark he was meant to kill. I mean, dentistry gets a bad rep as them not being "real doctors" but it isn't something you can master in a few months or even a few years.

Thank you @gooddream that you make efforts to show the good and bad sides of each tv-serie you post about. I always trust your recommandation. And im looking for a new serie to watchas well , lol im using my friend's netflix account.
