never forget

We wanted to visit the Twin Towers but driving the city was crazy. We were students visiting the city on holiday break.

We decided on museums and visiting the Empire State Building and this photo reminds me of a very innocent and happy time.

We walked everywhere in a time when no one had their noses glued down on devices. The world news was not at our fingertips and we had no sense of dark forces scripting plots. We felt safe.

Today, even with all the security points one must go through to make it to the boarding gate, I wish I could say that I feel safe. Traveling is very different now.

The world changed September 11. I had several friends living in New York. I know of their stories running away from work, thinking their city, their country was under attack. And I know stories of friends and colleagues lost that day. My boyfriend’s best friend who worked in one of the towers, died that day. He had just graduated from school.

It was eerie to listen to a silent sky as all flights were cancelled.

How do we answer when a child asks what happened? I can’t believe it’s been 18 years and it’s still a much debated day.

Never forget this day. We are not as naive and innocent as before. There’s still many people suffering the repercussions of that day. The surviving heroes that inspired us despite the horrors of being in the frontline, still suffer and are fighting for their voice. I’m glad when I see that people remember this day and gather. The stair climb memorial is one that especially moves me.

Remember this day, fight the silence and heal our country and world. Love and seek truth and may that unite us.
