In this part of the world were I grew up, there's a strong belief that the name you bear has a mark on you.
You'll often see parents naming their children after saints or old legends, hoping the child takes after them.
Most Nigerian surnames are adage with strong meaning too, for example my last name is "Okhuelegbe" translating to English it means "the trouble I didn't find cannot harm me". I believe it and I must say, it has worked for me.
The importance of a good name can never be over emphasized, that's why "A good name is better than gold".
