Industries around the world are being hit hard by the pandemic, there’s no doubt about that. The entertainment industry has seen better days as production has slowed across multiple fronts with border restrictions and isolation measures are put into place. Does this mean your favourite shows and most anticipated movies are coming to an end with the virus? Not quite, but things are most definitely changing for the near term. Regal and Cineworld are major cinema chains in the States and UK and they’re about to shut their doors due to difficult state of business in a pandemic.
Simply put, people are not willing to go and watch their favourite movies under current conditions. Even with income from those who wish to do so, this is a fraction of what would normally be taken and the overheads for these venues run a pretty premium as some of the world’s most famous blockbusters debut on these screens. Delays in production also means there’s even less of a reason for customers to visit the cinema. Secret agent flick James Bond is one of many to delay, leaving the cinema venues high and dry without much to show for the foreseeable future.
Is this the end of cinema as we know it? Personally, I think in the near term we will see a change in the way cinematic releases are done. With Disney’s Mulan hitting streaming services exclusively, there is a potential case for similar releases in the coming months. Perhaps we may see an adaptation of cinema business shit to drive in experiences once more. What a ride that would be, perhaps a more radical makeover is needed to survive in the current climate. Aside from what a venue can do however, the dry spell of releases is spelling doom for these chains and some companies are now shifting to streaming services. The sequel to Borat was recently announced, featuring comedian Sacha Baron Cohen and this will be available to watch on Amazon Prime Video later this month. Interestingly, this might be included under Amazon’s Prime subscription without additional fees in comparison to Disney.
So what can be done to save cinema chains? In my opinion, there isn’t much to be salvaged under current conditions. With lockdowns all over and the filming industry taking hits, this downturn in business is inevitable and cinemas will struggle to operate. Perhaps in a few years we will see the return of the big screen but I won’t be surprised to see other chains follow in the coming months.
