Today's Weed News for October 3rd 2018 #NEWJERSEY

For today's weed news we go to the Garden State.

During a town hall held on Facebook live this past Monday, New Jersey governor Phil Murphy once again took an optimistic stance about recreational cannabis legalization in his state.

When asked specifically about when recreational weed is going to be legal in New Jersey, Murphy said he believes it will be "sooner than later".

At the beginning of 2018, the governor asked the New Jersey state Legislature to draft a cannabis legalization bill and present it to him before the year ended. Unfortunately, due to a lot of missed deadlines and difficult arguments among lawmakers, that goal is starting to look kind of lofty as the year winds down.

But Murphy still believes they can pull it off before 2019 starts. After New Jersey state Senate President Stephen Sweeney recently said that the New Jersey Senate could vote on a cannabis bill as early as October 29th, Governor Murphy concurred saying:

"Based on the tenor of discussions and the give and take we've gotten, that feels about right... People have got to remember: We're not inventing marijuana. This exists right now. It's not regulated. It's in the hands of the bad guys. Kids are exposed. It's not taxed. And the inequities, particularly among racial lines, continue."

He does make some good points if you ask me. The weed is and has always been there. And the the fact that the vast majority of cannabis-related arrests in the US seem to involve minorities for some reason has been proven over and over.

But even if a bill should be finalized and put up for a vote by the Senate before the end of this month, the State Assembly would also need to vote on that bill before it lands on Governor Murphy's desk to sign.

It is not yet clear if the State Assembly is or is not ready to vote on such a bill at the same time as the Senate.

But just as in New York, it's beginning to look like New Jersey has seen the light about the benefits of cannabis legalization.

And that's what's up Garden State!
