BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:00 A.M.) - Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said that participants of the Libyan peace conference in Sicily were able to agree on a common statement, speaking on the second and final day of the event on in Palermo on Tuesday.
“It is important that ultimately it was possible to agree on a final document by consensus. I think it will be published today,” Bogdanov said.
He added that the document “contains almost all the assessments of the world community related to various aspects of the crisis and the fundamental tasks that we all see with the Libyan parties under the auspices of the UN, as the path and roadmap for resolving the Libyan crisis.”
Since the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has been in a state of civil war. Power is split between the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli and the Tobruk government - supported by LNA chief Haftar - in the country's east.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte met with General Khalifa Haftar, head of the Libyan National Army (LNA).
Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and Libya's UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez Serraj were among the leaders gathering in Palermo at the behest of Conte.
