According to Gartner estimates, 61.1 million computers were delivered in the second quarter of this year, 4.3% less than the same period a year earlier. The IDC Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computer Device Tracker shows that this figure is 60.5 million a year, which is 3.3% less than last year.

Gartner argues that PC manufacturing is in the midst of a 5-year recession and says the latest figures represent the 11th quarter to cut supplies.

According to Gartner, factors affecting PC sales are related to growing demand for Chromebooks supported by Google. Worldwide, sales of Chromebooks increased 38% last year, while the total PC market declined by six per cent.

The Chromebook is not a substitute for the computer at this time, but it can potentially become a replacement for the computer if certain conditions are met in the future, says Gartner Chief Analyst Mikaka Kitavawa.

Market experts have rated HP as the leading retailer of computers, saying its sales have increased despite market cuts. After that come Lenovo, Dell and Apple in that order.
