Vaccinated people will still need to wear a mask outdoors in crowded settings until widespread vaccination is achieved, according to the CDC.
Fully vaccinated individuals can safely attend small gatherings outdoors without wearing masks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Tuesday.

"If you're fully vaccinated and want to attend a small outdoor gathering with people who are vaccinated and unvaccinated, or dine at an outdoor restaurant with friends from multiple households, the science shows – if you're vaccinated – you can do so safely unmasked," CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said at a press briefing.
Walensky said that "generally, for vaccinated people, outdoor activities without a mask are safe." A growing body of evidence suggests that the risk of transmitting COVID-19 outdoors is significantly smaller than indoor transmission. But experts warn that the risk isn't zero, and infections can still happen outside.
The CDC still recommends vaccinated people wear masks in crowded outdoor settings like concerts where social distancing might not be possible and unvaccinated people might be in attendance.
"We will continue to recommend this until widespread vaccination is achieved," Walensky said.
She added that vaccinated individuals who have waited two weeks after their final dose can safely resume some indoor activities while wearing a mask. Those activities include going to a movie theater, attending a worship service, attending a small gathering inside, participating in a high-intensity exercise class and eating at an indoor restaurant or bar.

"Although these vaccines are extremely effective, we know that the virus spreads very well indoors," Walensky said. "Until more people are vaccinated and while we still have more than 50,000 cases a day, mask use indoors will provide extra protection."
Unvaccinated people can also safely exercise with members of their household outdoors without a mask or attend a small outdoor gathering with fully vaccinated family and friends without a mask.
The guidance comes as over 95 million people – nearly 29% of the total U.S. population – are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to CDC data. More than 42% of the population has gotten at least one dose of the vaccine. As the vaccination effort moves on from those who want the shot the most to other groups, the rate is expected to fluctuate.

The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration last week lifted the recommended pause on the use of the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine after examining a small number of cases of rare and severe blood clots in people who received the shot. The move came just hours after a CDC advisory committee gave its endorsement to resuming using the vaccine in people ages 18 and older.
According to CDC data, over 8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine have been administered. Close to 10 million additional doses have been delivered to states and territories and are ready for use.
