Is It Really A Supervolcano?

in news •  6 years ago  (edited)

A little more than two weeks ago, I posted about a Supervolcano developing under the East Coast. Well, it isn't exactly what it seems.

Well this was based off a study that was published late last year, one that said that we should not expect a new Yellowstone-esque caldera anytime soon, or even in the future.

A heat glow beneath those three states, first discovered back in the 1970s, was long thought to be the afterglow of a dead, once-upwelling plume of mantle material termed the “Great Meteor”. Using fresh seismic waves to determine what material resided down below, a paper in 2016 concluded that there’s an active, independent upwelling of very hot rock taking place right now.

What was actually said? That one day, maybe millions of years from now, there could be some baby volcanos popping up around the area. The 50 million year time period for the slow-moving small mass of ballooning heat below is still proposed but nothing supervolcanic. Having a plume doesn’t mean you’re going to get a supervolcano; you could get a series of shield volcanoes, like over in Hawaii with Kilauea.

Being someone who can't stand disinformation or people not doing their research, just saying things with very minimal understandings, research, or evidence to something, I am happily retracting that supervolcano article, I apparently didn't do enough myself for that one! Just goes to show you, don't believe everything you read.

We all should know the mainstream media likes to embellish or twist the truth. It's unfortunate that people gravitate towards it and promote it more. Unfortunately, those who pick news straight away without doing more research and reporting it as a fact are bound to report fake or half-true news. This is just a good reminder to do research before entrusting clickbait.

Interesting

I'd say you still haven't factored everything. If left alone, it may take 50 million years to be anything special. However, it will not be left alone. The effects of Nibiru have not reached their apex by a long shot, and in the past, that's had some significantly chaotic effects on geology, volcanism, even continental arrangement.

I did, however, factor Nibiru into the original post, as the study had been blown out of proportion and it would take about 50 million years to see if possibly baby volcanos would start popping up. So a supervolcano would still be misinformation.

Great report, thank you!
