Steemit, I interviewed former facebook ads guy...is this why Steemit & dTube will succeed?

in news •  7 years ago

Whether you like or dislike, agree or disagree with his assessment of the ads universe as he developed it on Facebook, it seems that there's no question SOME of the demand for platforms like Steemit relates to the tracking and ads world that exists on sites like Facebook and many others.

Agree/disagree? Leave me your thoughts in a reply!

The innovation is coming. Steemit has a bright future! HOLD and contribute to the community!

that is so true! steemit has a great future it is the new concept of monetizing the internet!

I can definitely envision a day when we see ads on Steemit. It is only a matter of time.

It won't necessarily be ad banners like on every other social media site. Once the big crowd is reeled in lured by the high rewards, entities interested in shaping public opinion or influencing target audiences will buy Steem Power and start creating content themselves. The crowds will follow as those content creators will be able to reward their followers.

Imagine flag wars between conservative and liberal organizations on Steem. :D

SImply put. YES

Yup dude... Plz do follow.

It is good we have this kind of approach and optimism but right now it is not that easy to give a tough fight to facebook or Youtube. They have developed that infrastructer in years.Steemit also needs to evolve.Good thing is,we are on the right track.

We have to admit that Steemit has a very bad interface. It's very unclear how to use the site and even less clear how the currency system works. The design of this entire platform is intuitive and it's a wonder the community has grown this much.

You have a point there. There is always room for improvement.
I am really hopeful that we will see chages soon and it will get better with time.

same as everything with digital crypto. lol
it is a just short remake with the idea of making money

I think steemit.com needs a lot of innovation for its rapid growth.... Nevertheless it is here to stay.

Yeah, definitely we have to work a lot.

Im agree with you @suf1an

In my case was more about monetizing my content at first. Nowadays it's because of everything: ownership, monetizing content, privacy. Hearing Mark Zuckerberg talking feels more and more like hearing a politician.

Mark Zuckerberg probably has some form of autism considering his total lack of communication skills. Not that autism is much different from a politician.

Hello friends, I'm new to this platform and I'm interested in learning more, when you want, go to my blog to get more information and know us, I like to make new friends, greetings!

Why does Zuckerberg always have a blank look on his face? Anyone know who has controlling interest in FB?

No but I do know inside his sweat shirt he has a pyramid with the all seeing eye so I would take a guess and say Satan has controlling interest.

I have read some article here on steemit that facebook will also use SMTs after they are launched.

Talent and execution are necessary for success moreso than a good idea. Another great statement that encourages me about Steem and EOS!

Mr. Martinez, being a rather smart guy and all, needs to stay off the Latte's before doing interviews. Or, is it possible to slow down the playback? I had a difficult time following him so fast. Made me feel better about fb in that they DO NOT sell our private data, but still I believe for Steemit and Dtube to succeed, there will need to be some form of financial sustenance going forward if they want to compete with the big dogs.

Beep!Beep! @shadow3scalpel & listkeeper @chairborne have your six new veterans, retirees and military members on STEEM. We’ll be patrolling by to upvote your posts (because you are on the list) and we'll answer any questions you leave us. Comment by @shadowspub. This is a opt-in bot.

Another option is to list their coin on more exchanges, that can help with the financial assistance

Yes, for sure!

The thing with Facebook is they are making a KILLING in revenue from business' promoting their products or services..

I watched an episode of shark tank, 2 difference business' pitched their ideas to the sharks and they each mentioned that they spend over $250,000 on Facebook ads....That's half a million dollars from TWO random people on shark tank...that is some serious money...

Now Mark Zuckerberg wants to implement cryptocurrenies one way or another.

While I do not think steemit can ever make Facebook irrelevant i DO feel that steemit will have its proper place in the same level as Facebook and offers censorship way to earn while many people are turned off by Facebook and calling it things like FBIbook.

At least for me I will be doing all of my posts here on steemit and have not been contributing to Facebook for quite some time now. I rather grow with you guys and make some coin on the way :)

To dethrone fb, it will take another platform model, with great UI, such as that site called SteemThat, which is still in beta. This is what Steemit needs to even begin going up against Suckerborg. I'm connected with SteemThat and I like what @binkley has done so far. It can only get better!

I seen this too and am with you on trying to stay of fed book. Its all about making new contacts learning, reading and understanding more. being appreciated for kind words or good advise or banter....

... and to be rewarded for it! $$$

Believe me or not I wrote that first time round then edited it not to sound like am here for rewards. Am.here for people who can benefit from my content or opinion.
Cheers for comment. Will follow and check your content and no doubt comment also.

My comment still stands!

Great interview and video, lots of good info. There needs to be a better algorithm for the payouts on Steemit, posts with little value or content getting paid large amounts that probably don't deserve it.

give you a follow , like your wisdom :D

Thanks for the follow, gave you an upvote.

Cheers, Going to start a personnel blog along with anything else I can create, any questions or comments and pointers most welcome and appreciated.

Tell your friends. Be patient. Teach them. Encourage the participation, adoption, use, and success of all worthwhile endeavors in the crypto world. D tube is undoubtedly set to succeed.

We are lucky to be here and among the first to benefit.

Its took me to sit down quite a few times. just got a new desktop computer its much to my pleasure not using a phone to read or create content on. getting the steem of thing nicely now, well am enjoying it and that's why am here.

upvote back me . please

steemit still needs a huge amount of improvements in order to compete with big guys (Facebook, youtube or even reddit
most of the people are here to make extra cash. As now there are old members with so many followers who can make money with any post or comments this will create troubles for the new folks trying to catch attention. as the number of steemian increases it will be so difficult for te new steemian to be noticed and with time this will make people desperate and they will leave steemit. I suggest to steemit to add more options and explanation for new steemians to keep the numbers up

Definitely still improvements to be made, for sure

After a good look around I found lots of answers to things that left me wondering at first.
https://steemit.com/welcome

Okay I meant to ask this before, from your last video, but got sidetracked. Every time I try to play one of your videos, or any videos, on dTube they don't play. I scoured for FAQs, went to Steemit Chat and joined the dTube chat to ask why (got no response), fiddled with the settings, disabled addons, whitelisted it on everything, and googled my brains out.

I'm sure that I'm just dense, but why can't I watch these videos!?

unfortunately that's above my pay grade!

No disrespect, but that's kind of a poor response to "I want to consume your content, what do???"
If this was a real world response, I'd assume that the person saying it didn't care about their product/service/brand enough for me to care about it either.

This is a dead thread, not trying to make a point to the community. Just my 2 cents.

what I mean this, this is a technical issue with dtube. I don't have any control or connection to the technical underpinnings of why videos do or don't play, I just upload them. I would definitely consider contacting dtube about technical issues.

Fair enough. Thanks for the response.

How about on mobile? Sometimes web browsers can be a bit pain in the.....

Also, try the "Brave browser".

I use brave exclusively on my phone!

But I really prefer to use a larger display to watch videos. Small screens allow my periphery to find distractions. My ADD loves it. But, as for the disciplined part of my brain, not so much. The disciplined part of my brain is already fighting a losing battle. I don't want to arm the enemy.

Obviously Steemit/DTube are superior to all other platforms!

That's why we will win long-run. ;)

Technologically superior products don't always come out on top.

  • ME 262 vs P-51
  • Betamax vs VHS
  • Sega Genesis vs SNES
  • Sega Saturn vs PlayStation
  • Sega Dreamcast vs PS2
  • GameCube vs PS2
  • Firefox vs Chrome
  • IE vs anything
  • Almost any alt-coin vs Bitcoin

You could possibly throw Google+ vs Facebook or Linux vs Windows in there, although those are more subjective.

While technology is important and usually will surface to the top, that can take a long time and many complete failures first. Content, monetization, and marketing play huge factors, especially in something as fickle as websites.

Your opinions of what constitutes "superior" in these cases is subjective.
What you may see as a "flaw" or "not as good" may not be the case to another.

Plus, the superior product DOES come out on top, given that the advertising and promotion was equal.

This was not even close to the case in the examples you've provided.

I appreciate your input though. :)

Some like the play style of SNES > Sega Genesis.
Some people prefer how IE works to say.. firefox or chrome..

Believing that superiority has a set measurable scale is your ignorance. :)

A graphics card could be "superior" to another in SPEC.. but I may like the way the "less superior" graphics card renders things.. There's just no set scale of accurate measurability when the majority of any topic is opinion.

With that said, I was simply kissing the hypothetical steemit "ass" in saying that it's superior.
They both have their positive qualities and negatives. :P

And time-travel will always be superior to aging in place! (Now that's subjective!)

I completely disagree about dtube beating YouTube .. the primary reason being YouTube pays lifelong earning on any video posted ! Whereas dtube doesn't ... Secondly steemit can beat Reddit but definitely not Facebook ,
reason being Facebook has everything built in one page .. & they have managed everything quite well ! Now if fb CEO MZ counts on block chain he will create something powerful !

So forget about beating YouTube n Facebook $$$$

I do believe that not being able to earn rewards 7 days after a piece of content is posted is one of the downsides.

But people seem to not understand this... authoring comments still earns rewards long after the post payout has expired. Like forever!

@davidpakman i am in middle of creating a video & soon be uploading on dtube about pros & cons of dtube . m not good at creating a video but i will use text to speech converter & use some pics :) will send you link ASAP

I am sure about Steemit, but not DTube because videos are deleted there after seven days.

I was not aware of videos getting deleted after 7 days. Thats not good. Thanks for letting us know.

This is incorrect.

You can upload a video, then see what will happen after seven days.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

You can still find them, they are just no longer in the tags you used. Tags are for current material.

Edit: they should be at the same https address they were when they were visible to find by search.

votes.png

Is it normal that they are deleted from "My Channel" part? If so, DTube wouldn't compete with Youtube in this way.

The raw data is there a user friendly interface has yet to be created for easy access.

Good to know .

After seven days, it ceases to earn revenue just like any post on Steemit (except for active and ongoing commenting). It may drop out of the trending tags but it will always be searchable and on your posting page on Steemit (unless you delete it there).

As we all know that there is no limit to earn revenue from videos on Youtube such as seven days.

But the potential to earn much more lies with Steemit/Dtube. I have videos on YT that have 20,000 views (I know, not much) that have earned less than $10 in over two years with YT monetization. I could do that with one short video on Dtube in a single day!

But no revenue after seven days. What I meant to say was that lifetime revenue on DTube would make it more rewarding.

Except for ongoing comments that can continue to earn. Just like on Steemit, you can visit a post that is 1 year old, make a comment and if that comment is upvoted (during the next seven days), you get the reward. So basically, you could have an ongoing conversation forever and earn author rewards.

One of the first video uploaded on DTube (7months ago) :

Still playing fine.

Very interesting video, I must admit that I had a lot of preconceived notions wrong about Facebook. Two main concerns pop up in my mind at the end of this video; one is that we oftentimes do not have a choice of when we are tracked, and two is how a technology like this can be adapted to domestically spy on people in the event of political unrest. That being said, being someone who has used Facebook since 2007 on and off, I feel like the ads are the least of the problem. I really wish the same technology that can determine what products I like would help lead people in my direction that I would like the same. The only reason I know about David Pakman is sheer luck, but surely an algorithm could have determined I would enjoy David Pakman content. I'd rather be advertised people than products.

Excellent work as always David

SImply put. YES !

yes

I am optimistic to the developers of the Steemit Platform and the D-Tube to bring all of us who are already here in a more advanced direction with the various facilities and infrastructure needed later on despite the tough competition in sight.

I think we made Zuckerberg rich enough already, it's time for normal people to be rewarded for their own content. Facebook and youtube build a plataform for ppl to put content in, and keep the money mostly to themselves, we are the ones creating content not youtube, not facebook

Zuckerberg looks like a robot or zombie just doesn’t look right.

steemit is basically the same as every user competing for shares of stock

no competition, its fact finding even exploring with out censorship where people appear sensible.
if you get something from it then great you did something right I guess.
Best regards Dave

Facebook, youtube and other platforms have developed their infrastructer for years... and there's no question they are at the top. Steemit might make it, but it will be really difficult to achieve the top.

I don’t believe so , if they can make signing in to d tube a little easier it would be nice still have not got in but working on it .why they make it so damn hard.

Ha, I'm still trying to upload my first video! nada

I fully agree with you....steemit is changing lives instead of wasting post wr using it to create wealth big tombs up to steemit boss

Amazing video!! Honestly Since i have joined Steemit , it didnt take me long to realize that this is the future and platforms such as Facebook and Youtube are slowly diminishing under fiscal greed. What was once made for people to express their free and unbiased opinion has evolved into a lure for agencies to feed the masses information they are paid to inform and honestly i find that disgusting. This is an amazing opportunity for us to recuperate and start afresh and posts like these are what will help conserve its authenticity. Best of luck!!!
Love,
Sagaman.

Only time will tell ,it really depends on many factors and the evolution ( or not ) of society. Information goes so fast and is so dense , that is deleted in the human mind over a short period of time .

I saw some tech today with oled screens that was wild .

to be honest I was thinking this morning about how I could incorporate advertising into steemit

Make a post an push Promote, pay it and then watch the number of views go up?

Hey david, thanks for another great interview. It is not a subject that I have particularly strong feelings over but watching the interview gave me food for thought. Basically I feel that despite any targeted marketing efforts I know my own mind, what I want and I am not going to buy crap simply because it is thrown at me......be that the coffee machine that you mentioned, the pull over that guest mentioned or some obnoxious political view point. Basically if products, concepts or ideologies that fall within my areas of interest are being aggregated for me for my consideration then I am OK with that, partly because any such targeted action is only ever going to be a relatively small percentage of any investigation that I may undertake. P.S. I would giver you a journalism licence. Cheers J

I think that right now the problem with facebook and the other online giants is the degree of censorship and control they are imposing over their users. It seems to always be something new they don't like and it's never in your benefit.

Much of the interest in Steemit is due to backlash due to suppressio of content that doesn't fit the mainstream propaganda brainwashing narrative that you and MSNBC, Youtube, GOogle, etc push. Steemit is not an improvement on that model because lesbian corporate whore SJW's like you can still blacklist and even disappear content. Steemit is also highly censored and NOT decentralized...but at least it shows people there's a different way to structure video and social media platforms.

I don't know exactly about this but may be sure yes.

Steemit & dTube's potential is really high. Thank you for this vid. I think this will bring more people to Steemit.

i do agree.

For sure you can upload but after 7 days, thats what i can't tell

Where's that image from.

With time we'll get to know.

Don't know if i should agree or disagree because i don't understand your post well

So nice

I watch a video on YouTube -adams ruins everything- he said Facebook sells out information to ads market, which make then target thier users...

Nice post :)

I'm proud of you, keep on working.
Not my intention to beg, but if you please please upvote my post as well. Nothing wrong if we support each other. I know if you are a good person and help each other: )
my support let me add the spirit :)
I wait your presence in my post :) @davidpakman

https://steemit.com/aceh/@mahyul/jalan-jalan-ke-waduk-jelekat-lhokseumawe-8edd295ed6fc1

what are you doing now?
It seems like a mundane question- something you casually ask friends when you meet up-but it seems to have take 'netizens' by storm. This community is always looking for something exciting and new.
Today, it's so outdated to 'blog'. For netizens, "It's so 2004!". The new, fun and interesting buzz about the wires seems to be to'tweet'. Twitter.com seems to be the place where all the action is.

Steemit will for sure bring back the glory of blogging and when these incentives of earning is considered. No one can stop it from getting mainstream in near future for the layman.
For the Tech savvy, Steemit is more scalable than many in the market, frequent updation and parabolic popularity.

This is quite an interesting read and the content is real good. Thanks

Cool Video!

I agree with you as Steemit has done a lot for us!

I'm a bit concerned at how much this guy is pulling on his ear while saying that facebook doesn't sell your data. :/

Time will tell... but looks like steemit will stand the test of time

Just what we need...more ads...they're not happy with fiat currencies so now they going to start engineering campaigns to target cryptocurrencies...smdh

Hate ads!

With a passion equal to that I carry for politicians...

why I really like steemit, one of them because there is no advertisement here, let it continue like this ....

This is the future mate, Facebook, Youtube, Instagram and other globalist social media aplications will die soon or later!

I think steem needs to be a less personal facebook to fill it's own niche

After all its all for the money.. No one here is for "decentralize" or "blockchain" its just that here u make money, on FB you dont. The day FB starts giving money on likes, you will see what happens..

There will never be very much money on Facebook for content creators. It would cut into shareholder profits and that will set limits to how much content creators will be able to earn there. Look at it this way. Facebook has two billion active monthy users. The net income of Facebook is around 10 billion dollars per annum. If it gave everything away to its content creators, each would get only 5 dollars per year. That is dust.

nice post

Great dTube video my friend. Some really interesting points were discussed which really got me thinking about content creation, intellectual property and general ownership rights. It’s widely known that any piece of content whether audio or visual based essentially becomes an asset that is acquired by the Facebook platform, however, such content also works to grow FaceBook’s Ad Manager system exponentially.

Having used it to run ads for several side businesses of my own, it has really opened my eyes as to how much information is being gathered and stored by them. For instance you can search and filter audience using a number of extremely explicit filters, it’s quite confronting when you think about how targeted a person can become to advertising and other types of messaging in general.

I totally agree!! Great points.

We have a long way to go, but we will get there. The people who on on Steem are more excited and enthusiastic than any other social media community I know. We will persevere!

Build, build, build--and it may seem like you are not getting anywhere--then some critical mass point is reached and it all changes!

Keep plugging away everybody.

Anyone else messing with the Eclair Lightning wallet on the test blogging site Y'Alls? It's pretty cool seeing Bitcoin micropayments settle instantly.

LIGHT.jpg

Agree!!!. Maybe Mark Zuckerberg is afraid now :)

Agreed, steemit value its community.

in my case mark is always upgrading facebook so people would love it more, yes steemit would increase but definitely hard to beat facebook just saying

Mantap

Basic Attention Token has a new browser thats now out of beta: the Brave browser...

months ago before investing in BAT i thought it stood for some BATshit coin like "Guano" (GNO) but no its on the same level as steem come to find out... insightful post here =]

Steemit is the next generation of the block chain. Still a baby! lol

Congratulations @davidpakman, this post is the third most rewarded post (based on pending payouts) in the last 12 hours written by a Superuser account holder (accounts that hold between 1 and 10 Mega Vests). The total number of posts by Superuser account holders during this period was 1319 and the total pending payments to posts in this category was $17174.77. If you do not wish to receive these messages in future, please reply stop to this comment.

It deserves reflection! Growing in communities means supporting each other and learning to get to know the community. Sometimes it seems to me that in Steemit there is a pyramid, where the tip (the whales) reach that point for constancy. It is difficult to create empathy with communication 2.0, where we do not have the capacity to feel emotions instantly ...
Creating strategies and learning how to use strategies is important, as well as mastering other languages. In my case I am experimenting with post in Korean.

Great interview

I loved this one @davidpakman, but dtube takes so long to load tho'. Maybe you can use your leverage and take that up with the creators.

Please watch my videos and you can make my dreams come true....!!!!

I advertise on Facebook as a business page. They keep raising rates and lowering the views on posts. The nice thing Facebook has is the ability to target very specific people and use retargeting. Howrver, it is still frustrating seeing the views go down and down. I think more and more people will look for new ways to advertise. Steemit could be one of those new sources. Even without ads companies can buy votes and promote posts very cost effectively.

I wonder what happens to Steemit if it is all about who can buy the most votes? Can the whales downvote enough to discourage that behavior?

Do you think it can surpass facebook?

I completely agree with you.. Both vl succeed...

It seems to me the single most important aspect to the success of any Facebook / Reddit / Youtube / Etc. competitor is used adoption.

User adoption is really a two part issue, because there are two types of users. Content creators and content consumers. You need the right mix of both to be present.

Content consumers are relatively easy to attract, they will follow the quality content. We are on Youtube because all our favourite content creators are there. If they move, we move. In this sense, content creators are the key to this game IMO.

Content creators are much harder to attract, especially high quality people. The reason is they are already making bank on other platforms. Until now, a competitor platform had no chance of getting high numbers and good quality content creators, because they simply couldn't compete with the monetisation options of established platforms. Traditionally, to monetise you needed companies advertising on your platform, however advertisers need to see high numbers of users, otherwise it doesn't make any sense for them to spend money.

In this awesome puzzle, somehow a new solution has been figured out.

Steem allows content creators to generate revenue, which means there is a really good incentive for them to migrate. Add to this incentive the dissatisfaction of demonetisation on Youtube and all the misuse of power inherent to centralised websites.

Suddenly, content creators have all the reasons to join and they will bring their following with them. It's really unbelievable what is happening right now. Checking on Similarweb.com, both Steemit.com and D.tube are growing at an amazing rate.

Exciting times ahead :)

Steemit is very complex. Its been more than 6 months since I've joined and every day I figure out something new. In contrast it took me less than a week to figure out Facebook. Now I'm not trying to put steem down but there's a lot to be done in terms of user experience.

Despite its simple interface, FB has become a messy clutter of junk ads pushed down your throat based on data extracted from you.

On Steem I'm free to choose what I see on my feed. There's no manipulative algorithm running in the background trying to be the boss and choosing what I see.

Congratulations @davidpakman!
Your post was mentioned in the hit parade in the following category:

  • Pending payout - Ranked 9 with $ 554,58

it shall prevail!

there will be , and always will be, changes, and ones you have to be ready for and embrace as they do, making these platforms a necessity in your tool kit

I love lamp.

Amazing

Basically. Indeed

Content creators love Steemit for those reasons. But how long will investors want to buy STEEM? What's in it for them? There is a constant downward pressure to the price of STEEM as content creators to whom it is given exchange some of it for fiat. What other reason would there be for any investor to buy STEEM in addition to price speculation?

Smart Media Tokens could be the answer but why would anyone want to buy those if their users, too, hate advertising and paid promotions? The users themselves? Ok, but that would be a negative sum game as the net losses and winnings of content creators would be equal minus whatever witnesses will need to be paid for running then network.

This platform has no long-term future without accepting advertising and promotions. There is no free lunch.

imagine the facebook that pays u ? well its steem..

we will be fine. i remember when people laughed at facebook for challenging myspace. look where we are now.

Steemit is certainly a little rudimentary compared to the thriving social media platforms but where it excels is its community- Steemians are the best people In the world- bottom line

I hope Steemit doesnt become anything like facebook. Narcisssism and constant ads that cause schizophrenia. Very pleased with the content and intelligent observations from so many cool people here!

That’s been some real good stuff beeing discussed. I can’t add a lot just; Spreed this.

That is extremely interesting.

My whole thing against Facebook is that if I'm producing value for the company, I want a cut.

It's interesting how things are moving on so quickly on D.tube!
