If you follow my blog then you'll know that I recently waved goodbye to my eighteen year old daughter as she set out to start her life in the Carolinas with her older brothers. Now, just a few short weeks later, they are on the road 'home' as the area in which they live is predicted to be hit the hardest by what some are referring to as 'The Storm of the Century' or the '100 Year Hurricane'.
According to ABC News at 2PM EST: "This is not going to be one of those storms that hit and move out, out to sea; this is gonna be, you know, a Mike Tyson punch to the Carolina coast ..." said Jeff Byard, associate administrator for the Office of Response and Recovery with the FEMA.
While I'm thrilled that the junior members of the McLaughlin clan are on their way, my heart goes out to all of the residents who do not have the ability to head to safety- truly hoping that the storm loses steam before it makes landfall.
But even if it does, the predicted rainfall is equally as dangerous as the high winds. Just a couple weeks ago I put up a post of our area after a flood that was brought about by eight inches of rain and they are predicting as much as FORTY inches in NC. Since the average rainfall for North Carolina for an entire year is 54 inches, forty inches in a few days is monstrous.
If they get even half of that it's going to be a rough road, with probable power outages to add to the catastrophe, so keep the Carolinas in your thoughts over the weekend my empathetic steemit peeps!
Forty inches, thats elephant territory!
Hope its not too bad!

I googled it, looks like you also get an average of about 40 inches. For us when it rains, it pours. I think in your case it's lighter but more consistent. We have the downpours followed by days of sun.

Thank you! Mine would have been but they headed out a day ahead, so they'll be here in plenty of time. But it will still be nerve wrecking until we find out how bad it is since they have a number of friends down there who decided to weather it.

Ah jeez, I was only going to say that it's a good thing that the children are coming home, but when I researched about it, I'm afraid something quite worse is heading our way. God or whatever higher being help us all.

You should worry more about the hurricane not being JED...ED haha! We've stock up on supplies and fortified our defenses. Fingers crossed the storm will just pass.. like deadlines and fly-by-night friends haha

Fortunately it didn't! Some other parts of the country, particularly (and strangely) the cities on mountaintops were flooded though. But that's 4 or 5 hours away from where we live.

Oh my God Jed, that storm is massive! And the Philippines is so small! We get hit by Florence and only a fraction of the country will feel the effects- just so happened the kids were smack in the middle of it- but if Mangkhut hits your Island...now I'm worried!! Keep me posted!

We've been fortifying our defenses and gathering provisions the whole day. Not much else we can do now but hope everything will just pass. It's been dark the whole day, but the winds only started picking up two hours ago. Rain's only starting to pour as I type. Let's hope it isn't as strong as predicted

How close to Luzon are you? Are you likely to be affected?

Hey Deb! Don't be alarmed, but I actually live in Luzon haha! I'm in the Western part though and about 3 or 4 hours away from the projected center. I don't know if that's good or bad.

I'm glad your kids are coming home before the storm. Crossing my fingers that they will be able to return safely after the storm.
It's great they have somewhere to head.

Thank you! It's truly going to depend on if they get all that rain, the flooding will be horrendous if they do.

Jeepers, that sounds terrible. And 1.7 million people recommended to evacuate. That's just mind boggling. I'm glad your kids are coming home. You would have been beside yourself.

Yup, they're here, well most of them- Josh stayed behind with his mom. But he's in an area that shouldn't be hit as hard currently. It's really the aftermath that's going to be bad there, the flooding etc. But now I feel bad for making a thing out of this- did you see the Super Typhoon Mangkhut? It's heading straight for the Philippines and it's bigger and stronger than Florence, plus the Philippines is so small I don't know there would be anywhere to run to! Now I'm worried about Jed instead!!

It sounded like it was a specific part of the Phillipines, so hopefully nowhere near Jed. I;ll be keeping my fingers and toes crossed while I'm away. Though hopefully I'll be able to get online and at least read a bit, even if I can't comment. And will be looking for something saying he's ok.
