The dream of many drivers - in the Australian state of Victoria computer virus has attacked police speed cameras. All mandates issued since the attack have been revoked.
The virus has attacked 55 cameras located in Melbourne. As it was established, the virus attacked on 6 June, and was neutralized only from 22 to 23 June. During this period, based on measurements, 590 seats were issued. All have been canceled. "I made the decision to revoke the seats because I wanted the residents to have a 100% confidence in our actions," said Victor Guenther of the Victoria Police.
What attacked radars?
What kind of pest has attacked Australian speed cameras? This was WannaCry, ransomware attacking devices running on older versions of Windows, blocking the system and demanding ransom for re-access.
WannaCry attacked the world on May 12. Within a few hours, the company's security systems detected at least 45,000 infections in 74 countries. Malicious software used in the attack exploited a vulnerability in Windows systems that was described and removed in Microsoft's MS17-010 bulletin. The tool used in the attack - "Eternal Blue" - was revealed in a set of information published by the Shadowbrokers group on April 14.
Once infected the system attacking the virus installed a malicious module (rootkit), which allowed the download of software ransomware encrypting the victim's data. Upon completion of the encryption, a message was sent saying that the US $ 600 equivalent in Bitcoin was required for the decryption of the data.
How did the infection happen?
All indications are that WannaCry has moved to a speed camera with a USB flash drive. How it's possible? Probably technicians updating the software) of the device (June 6) used the portable memory that was infected. After the attack on the radar, the device cyclically restarted, but in the interval between reboots still fulfilled its task - hence the mandates. As the company responsible for the maintenance of the radar, the virus has already been removed.
WannaCry - how to defend yourself?
Ransomware WannaCry should not be a problem for people with Windows 7, 8 and Windows 10, but it is always a good idea to be on the alert. Here are some general tips to keep in mind:
· Install the official patch posted by Microsoft to remove the vulnerability used in the attack.
· Ensure that security solutions are active on all nodes in the network.
· Make regular backups so that you can restore data in the event of an attack.
· Use a security solution that is equipped with threat detection technologies based on their behavior in the system. This gives you the ability to identify even unknown malicious programs.

Id imagine these are set and forget devices until you check on it a year down the line and see its not patched..
Wannacry attacks SMB on port 445. If you dont need this block it on your firewall. Especially if you are a company block 445 on you boundry firewall.
Update all your Microsoft boxes and ensure a regular patching policy is in place

If its only the speed camera that'll be ok some people think, but first its the speed cam than its the traffic light and then your bank account...hacking is dangerous.

those things are all already a reality
this is good because it's not an attack on an individual
