They have had this vote every year for decades and declined because they did not have to pay federal taxes. Now that they are bankrupt and want us to bail them out, all of a sudden, they vote overwhelmingly to become a state. I hope we do not reward that type of fiscal mismanagement by their government and that type of gaming the system by the populace. This would amount to stealing from every US taxpayer to pay for this unfair situation. I vote NO WAY! You didn't want it then, we don't want it now.
Certainly not in this case. That would be forcing every US taxpayer to pay for the years of mismanagement to a community who shunned those very taxpayers year in and year out their whole lives. We have sent the island of Puerto Rico millions of dollars in aid every year and they have refused each of those years to contribute to our government as all taxpayers do. It's not fair to the taxpayers of this country to now take on a massive burden in addition to all the burden we have already endured on their behalf. I believe in rewarding those that deserve it, not those who don't.
A way that would be reasonable would be a relief fund that would accept donations from the goodness of people who can and choose to help the island out. But for the government to do it is to FORCE every taxpayer to do it. That way they would get some assistance, but not just a blank check. They would then be forced to change their governance in a way that is sustainable and good for all.

Just out of curiosity: what would warrant a bail out for you? Would anything?
