Coal  only supplied 2% of electricity in the United Kingdom during the first six months of 2017 - a stark contrast to just five years ago, where coal represented about 40% of the electricity mix - as the country moves to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and tackle its air pollution challenges.

love that stat.. soon it will be 0 IT'S QUITE INCREDIBLE,, but also reflects the fact that we don't mine coal anymore in the UK. it transofrmed the world, fueled the industrial revolution and powered our modern lives when electricity was too cheap to meter. it now seems arcane, an anachronism. what kind of civilisation would burn coal for power ? a relatively primitive one. now we have much better technology and we don't actually need to burn any more fossil fuels. hopefully within the next 20 years, we'll convert the cars and aeroplanes to electric and the ships will have sails again ! ( it does help, some ships now have kites) as auxillary power.
