Philosophical question...
Let’s say I beat up my neighbor while he's mowing his lawn. The reason why isn’t important. Dude might have had it coming, maybe not.
My punishment is X.
**If the neighbor happens to be a sitting United States Senator, should my punishment be more severe? **
If I threaten my neighbor, I might get one local officer to look into my threats... If I threaten the president, I get federal law enforcement attention and a much more severe penalty.
Usually I am opposed to treating people unequally, (hate crimes) and I am vehemently opposed to treating elected officials differently than normal citizens (tax treatment, pensions, special healthcare, differing thresholds of prosecutability when committing crimes).
Anyone have any thoughts? Should the punishment change if the victim is "someone important"?

No, the punishment should not change, but the US justice system is designed to benefit the rich and powerful...

Commoners can't expect the same importance under law as the anointed.
Thats absurd.

The po-po is a gang. A gang protects their own.
The federal govern-cement is a bigger gang. And they have real thugs to protect them.
It isn't a difference in how the law sees you, in fact, the law is irrelevant.
"Its a big club, and you aren't in it" - George Carlin
What you may not know is that the signers of the constitution, and their children, own the govern-cement. They are above it. It is their tool. You are beneath it. So, of course the govern-cement protects them.
You, they show up after you have beaten your neighbor, and arrest you, because hey, they have to make quota. It has nothing to do with you actually breaking the law.

If the goal of law is to be impartial, hence Lady Justice's blindfold, crimes against important individuals should not be treated differently. An interesting distinction you made was that certain individuals command greater attention to personal threats. This doesn't go against an impartial justice system. Some individuals are more 'valuable' to an organization based on their skills, resources, etc.
(A topic for another post, is whether crimes should be treated differently based on age...)
