With memories of Fukushima still fresh on everyone's minds, the prospect of another meltdown in Japan is not resting easy on the people of Japan this afternoon. A strong, magnitude 6.7 earthquake has struck near the power plant, and it is now on emergency power, and three million Japanese power consumers are without power.
Here is the breaking story:
The 2011 8.9 megaquake was obviously many times more powerful, but that one struck off shore and it was the ensuing tsunami that swamped the plant, tripping out it's electrical systems, including its cooling systems, and causing the catastrophe there. Of course, with earthquakes, there are many variables and depth and proximity often outweigh overall Richter Scale ratings when it comes to how much damage is done locally.
The nuclear plant involved today was already in shutdown mode, which DOES NOT equal "Safe" as the fuel rods must still be kept cool. Fortunately, it appears the current situation remains well in hand, and that emergency diesel generators are working and keeping things under control, for now. The article says there is 7-days of diesel fuel on hand at the plant, which, of course, the Japanese (I would think) could easily supplement by trucking in more.
Still, the incident has rattled nerves because of te number of people affected, and because Fukushima is still so fresh on people's minds.
holy moly man..sir patriot..Japan just needs to change energy sources, it doesn't look like the place is safe enough because it's earthquake prone!

Agreed. The Fukushima plant should never have been built right on the Pacific coast with only 5-meter tsunami walls.

howdy again sir mepatriot..5 meter tsunami walls? lol. that's pretty bad. But I wonder if they are working on alternative energy sources and isn't Fukushima polluting the entire ocean?

I'm sure there are other energy sources that aren't being publicly discussed.
I am sure it is polluting it to some degree, but I am not so sure it's as bad as some people say. The enormous volume of the Pacific Ocean can probably handle/dilute a lot more radioactive particulate than the worst of the fearmongers are saying.

oh well that makes me feel better and I did see something on tv about them getting ready to finish installed a big frozen wall or something like that and they think that will seal the leaking.
yeah some people say that the whole world is doomed and that all the ocean is dying because of it.

I know. I've seen some of their Youtubes, and I think they are alarmist and unrealistic.
