History Of Karapan Sapi

Karapan Sapi is native culture of Madura, which has been known since the 14th century. At the beginning, sapi/bull used only for transportation on Madura. Madura soil is unfertile for farming, so they become fishermen or cattlebreeder. Once upon a time a cleric Syeh Ahmad Baidawi (Pangeran Katandur) introduces a new method of farming by using a pair of bamboo known as "Nanggala" or "salaga" drawn by two cows to plowing the rice field. After using this plowing technique they can improve soil fertility so that it can be used for farming. At the past they use bull race to find strong and fastest cows for plowing the rice fields. Nowaday karapan sapi has become a tradition that was held to celebrate the harvest time.
