The thing is HK is a very cosmopolitan city even if 95% of the people are Chinese. This means you can have your own network of people that speaks your language and do the things you like to do all within the fabric of society. You can go years with only English, have only English speaking friends, and frequently only English speaking places and be fine. Just like some HK native can go through their whole life without knowing a lick of English and not have any trouble.
