Bernas.id - Residents of Melbourne, Victoria, saw a strange phenomenon after the storm hit the area on December 19, 2017.

Residents see the formation of mammatus clouds or breast clouds. Dicuplik from ABC Australia Plus, Thursday (20/12/2017), the phenomenon began when a lightning storm swept the state of Victoria.

Flash floods and power cuts that affect tens of thousands of people have occurred. Hurricanes enter the CBD area in Melbourne around dinner time.

It was at the same time as people started preparing for the night ahead of their television, or their phones and tablets.

The inhabitants of Melbourne also took their eyes off the screen of their device, into a strange phenomenon that dazzled in the sky.

After the Melbourne storm passed, they saw a strange-shaped cloud and uploaded it to social media to share what they had seen.

Weather forecaster from the Meteorological Bureau, Dean Marramore, says that the visible circular cloud is called a mammatus cloud or a breast cloud.

"This is the Latin name and it means breast, udder or mammary glands," Marramore said.

"Basically, that's how they look." Mammatus clouds form when the cold air is submerged under the clouds.

"They are usually formed behind the severe thunderstorms we experienced last night," explained Marramore.

"You get a lot of air going up into the storm and then some of them try to settle back."

According to Marramore, this rare formation of clouds generally lasts between 15 and 20 minutes.

He said the mammatus cloud that happened at that time was very "impressive" because they happen at sunset.
