SolidEnergy Systems from Massachusetts, has developed a Lithium-metal battery that it says doubles the energy density of current lithium-ion batteries. Meaning their battery could be half the size of a lithium-ion battery while holding the same amount of energy, or alternatively it could be the same size and hold twice as much energy.
This claim implies that a typical drone could fly for more than double the current maximum flight time on a single charge.
The claimed 1,200 watt-hours per liter is only 1 order of magnitude lower than that of gasoline (~12,000 Wh / liter) so it will be interesting to see how stable it is thermally.
