I think in either case, higher ed or not, you have to weigh the options for yourself then in the future you wont have any regrets. It also seems that for so many years going to college right out of high school was something kids did as a right of passage instead of actually obtaining an education. Plus, many people don't actually get jobs in the field they studied in college. I do believe the population is different among those with graduate and doctorate degrees. Obviously people seeking higher ed in those areas are working in their field and looking to advance. However, for the kids coming out of high school, I don't think college is for all of them. Whatever you choose, it is yours and no one can take that away.
