The Deep State have been telling us that Donald Trump is crazy for a year, but are now happy to hand him Orwellian powers of surveillance

in news •  7 years ago

For a long time the FBI, NSA and CIA have tacitly been suggesting that Donald Trump is completely unfit for office and does not value their work. However, now their coveted licence to conduct mass surveillance is on the line, they are more than happy to hand the President huge unchecked power to access the entire world's communications at his request.

FISA Section 702 passed in the House today and will likely pass through the Senate after endless lobbying by Intelligence Community hawks. It allows intelligence agencies (who report to Trump) to sweep up the communications of anybody outside of the United States, but a loophole easily allows agents to access American communications without a warrant as well.

Leading the pro-702 effort was James Comey, who is the figurehead of a movement to impeach Trump at the moment. Apparently he is unconcerned that Trump is being handed the right to surveil him with this legislation.

Intercept journalist Jeremy Scahill had the best hot take of proceedings on Twitter, in my opinion:

It's hilarious how Donald Trump in his coke-addled senility will sometimes stumble on a non-terrible idea, like giving everyone health care, or not secretly mass surveilling everybody unaccountably, and then his handlers have to come in and baby talk him into changing his mind. He talks about the deep state but apparently all it takes to hide from Trump is a little massaging and a little flattery. Just ask Mike Pompeo.

I guess people have forgoten that the world is a stage...

Right (Bush Sr.), Left (Clinton), Right (Bush Jr.), Left (Omaba), Right (Trump), Left (Opera)...

Just like a military march... wake up!
