James Harrison, an Australian man with rare blood type having already saved 2.4 million babies, donated blood for the last time on 11th May, 2018. James, who is 81 years old, has a blood plasma that contains an antibody used to create a serum known as anti-d which can protect babies from the potentially deadly disease called Rhesus D Haemolytic. When a woman with a Rh negative blood type concieves a baby with Rh positive blood, her body's defence will consider the baby’s red blood cells as something dangerous and attacks. This causes many still births or other severe complications in newborns.
James Harrison has donated for more than 60 years and done over 1173 donations, a very remarkable feat! He has also been awarded the Medal of Order, Australia.
