Prospects of solar batteries from perovskite

in news •  7 years ago

Perovskite - this is the name of a mineral discovered at the beginning of the century before last in the Ural Mountains. In nature, it is calcium titanate contained in rocks that have been exposed to extreme temperatures and pressures.

Leaping electrons

In a photovoltaic cell, a perovskite photoconductive layer is sandwiched between layers of two further semiconductors, for example, from a metal oxide and an organic polymer serving to transport charge carriers. The electrons in the semiconductor have different energy, and on the basis of this they can be divided into levels.

Why the perovskite has not conquered the world yet

"The record efficiency (efficiency) of silicon batteries is today 26.6 percent." Researchers achieved the same competitive value in devices using new material at 22.7 percent, but it should be borne in mind that silicon has been working with silicon for half a century, but perovskite study only about nine years.

We are waiting for energy efficient buildings

Scientists believe that perovskitovye solar panels are better for household purposes than silicon, due to the fact that they are semitransparent. They can even be placed in a window of a house or apartment instead of glass. Such a solar battery is transparent because of the small thickness, which is on the order of hundreds and even tens of nanometers.

I hope we use solar energy more in coming days and tropical countries will be much benefited from its use.
