Edward Snowden says “the central problem of the future” is control of user datasteemCreated with Sketch.

I was just reading an interesting article on techcrunch.com about the interview Snowded did yesterday, which I missed.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey interviewed Edward Snowden today, and the big topic was technology.

During the Q&A (which was broadcast live from the Pardon Snowden Periscope account) Snowden discussed the data that many online companies continue to collect about their users, creating a “quantified world” — and more opportunities for government surveillance.

During the interview Snowden made a lot of insightful statements such as:

“If you are being tracked, this is something you should agree to, this is something you should understand, this is something you should be aware of and can change at any time"

or

“the people who need to be in control of that are the users.”

or

“This is the central problem of the future, is how do we return control of our identities to the people themselves?”

How do you, Steemians, perceive the figure of Edward Snowden: a hero of a villain?

Yes. It is a newslink my dear friend if your algorithm were good enough, you could parse the content of the post and see that im linking exactly the same link. Where is your code, my dear friend, I could adapt you to be smarter?

I wish it were that simple (disclaimer: I'm not the designer or affiliated). What I see is, sometimes people include links but don't make it clear making it look like their own work to the casual observer. I think your post is very clear here because you're using "blockquotes" though..

Yes. I was exactly thinking about that. In this case it would have been easy to cross check if the "non-quoted " text was part of the linked content or not. There should be a way to formalize this kind of "short-post" in a way that they are easy to be understood as a way to a) iniciate some discussion, here, in the comments section and b) Point to some insightful steemit-external content and not as some kind of plagiarism attempt.

Anyway? What do you think of the interview?. I mean: the blockchain (at least steem) is not really the best DB to store private data neither. Is big brother already watching us?.

As much as I love what Snowden did to expose the massive surveillance we all live under it saddens me greatly that no one seems to care to much or has any inclination to do much about it. It's not that hard to install browser addons to minimize tracking, or to use encrypted e-mail accounts to privatize communications. People still keep on using Google, Facebook et. al...sad.

So meaning that you would put the burden and the responsibility on the user side? Im mean, if I tell my aunty Emma to install a browser add-on and use encrypted emails comm. she will look at me disappointed asking if i`m insulting her in a new foreign language.

So are you saying that we all need someone else to take responsibility for our actions or in-actions? I prefer to take responsibility for my own privacy to the extent possible. If you prefer to allow someone else to do it for you then you can already see the consequences...it's what we have now.

But what about trusting? I'm mean, in theory, govermemts exist to take care of their cityzens, do they?

Wow! The government does not to exist "take care" of "their" citizens. The government, at least as setup in the USA, is there only to protect the rights of the people. That, sir, is a huge difference and if understood fully leads one to a totally different view of for whom and why governments should exist...read up on the Federalist Papers.
