Prior to 2011 i had lived in Abuja, Nigeria although i am not originally from there but i was born and raiser there but when i was ready to enter the University my parent like typical Nigerian parent decided my next destination for higher learning Calabar, maybe because they wanted me back in my roots.
The challenge though is, calabar is the Las Vegas of Nigeria, sex, drugs and more sex, infact girls from that part of the country when seen anywhere else are assumed experts in bad, and i had to go there as a 19 year old, 13 hours on a bus apart from my parent and that spelled doom for me right? Not really.
I moved in and settled well and true to the reputation, it was truly a haven for anything unlawful. Ironically not because i set out to make a difference or prove anybody wrong even without the knowledge of my parents, i just wasnt moved to join the train, i just wasnt feeling it and after the first semester words started floating around.
People started asking if i was gay? But i know i was as straight as straight can get and after the first year without sex and all, in the second semester of the second year i got a date and on her first visit to my apartment i told her i dont do sex just for the fun of it and after a bit of hesitation we were on the same page and had been till today 5 years and counting.
When it hit me that i had left a lagacy around is when i was about to write my final exams i had 2 second year student come up to me to ask if i can help them stay chaste as i had, and before long i was invited to the orientation ceremony for freshers to tell teach them about staying a virgin till graduation. I have moved back to abuja but am still remebered for that. I have not changed the world or the reputation of calabar but i have changed a few minds and that is what changing the world is about for me. Do for one, do for all and always remember to pay it forward.
Memory may fail you and fail people so dont set out to be remwmbered, set out to make yourself better that who you were yesterday and you may end up being better than all else and who knows if you go about it the right way and not rub it on their faces that you are trying to be good and all they may end up liking you and your ideas and eventually remember you for your impacts when you are gone.
