When you think of Macedonia, Skopje may be the first place to come to mind, but this postcard is inviting you to another region. With a history going back 6,000 years, Ohrid is one of the world’s oldest settlements, and it’s surrounded by striking natural beauty, the most enchanting of which is its lake.
Lake Ohrid resembles a painting in which the re ections of Mount Galicica blend with the silhouette of the city and the changing colours of sunlight. After you’ve climbed the historic castle and looked out over this beautiful landscape, wind your way down between the houses, which seem to be owing down from the cli s towards the river below. A protected area since it was first placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 1979, Lake Ohrid is so clear and calm that it will fill your soul with peace.
While they owe their existence to the scales of the Pashita fish found in the lake, just how Ohrid’s famous pearls are produced remains a family secret, but they’ll be a wonderful reminder of the lake and of 2017. When you’re in Ohrid, make sure to visit the “Water Museum”, located by the lakeside at the Bay of Bones. The striking view of the houses made of reed and wood will provide you with a lingering insight into the daily lives of the people who lived in the area in prehistoric times.
