I remember hearing on the radio something to the effect of "you know you're a New Yorker when you walk down a block and say - hey I remember when this or that used to be there."
It's crazy how certain neighborhoods change so rapidly in a short amount of time. Some would argue for the better - some for the worse. Many natives will also tell you that there are no real New Yorkers living in Manhattan as who can afford a $4,000 a month studio (if you can find one)?
Sure the more things change - the more they stay the same, but I still miss the old New York I know.

Were there ever any real New Yorkers living in Manhattan? If you could get there by subway or bus why would you want to?

Well perhaps in the 80's plus there's prestige that goes into saying you live in Manhattan.
