The US corners Russia: "it's time for Nicolás Maduro to leave"

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met on Tuesday May 14 with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, with whom he discussed the crisis in Venezuela and the importance of the departure of the dictatorship in the South American country.

"The time has come for Nicolás Maduro to leave, it has only caused misery for the Venezuelan people, and we hope that the Russian support for Maduro will cease," Pompeo told Lavrov after a meeting in Sochi, Russia.

In addition, he assured that Washington is absolutely opposed to any country interfering in the affairs of Venezuela: "We hope that the Russian support to Maduro is over," he said.

Pompeo's convincing statements to the Russian official show that the United States is increasing the pressure on the government of Vladimir Putin, which has become in recent years the lifeline of Maduro.
