Religions In Nigeria

Today being Sunday. I just want to talk about the Religious groups in Nigeria. I am guessing today is a religious day for most people in the world.

Amongst other ethnic groups as discussed earlier, there are three major ethnic groups in Nigeria. These are: The Hausa, The Yoruba and The Igbo Ethnic groups. Now this is important to know as we will be talking about them as we discuss the religious groups in Nigeria. They're as follows;

  1. Islam: This is the dominant religion in the Northern Nigeria, the Hausa region. It also had believers and  supporters in the South-Eastern, Yoruba region of Nigeria. The Islamic religion takes about 44% of the religions in Nigeria.
  2. Christianity: This includes all religions that claim to be 'Christ followers' and use the Bible as their Holy book. Christianity is dominant in the Eastern and Southern part of Nigeria, amongst the Igbo. Some people in the Yoruba region also practice Christianity. It takes about 55% of the religions practiced in Nigeria. So the Ijaw, Ibibio and other ethnic groups in the Southern and Eastern part of Nigeria claim to be Christians.
  3. Traditional Religion: This is worship of spirit(s) or of the ancestors of a particular place by the people of that place. They use some traditional tools to communicate with these spirits. With the introduction to Christianity and technology, this kind of religion is despised and hated by the many. It is not only ancient but evil to many so only less than 1% of the people in Nigeria practice this religion.

Now friends, you know the major religious groups in Nigeria.
