The movie industry in general has been a powerful and pivotal tool in shaping the society, building and unifying the nation through their educative, persuasive, informing and entertaining movie.
When I see the ease at which most of this actors performs, I am left with no choice than to celebrate their efforts. I want to thank @bright-obias and @steemalive for giving us this privilege to reminiscence on the impact of the movie industry, hence selecting our favourite actor.
Therefore, in lieu to this contest, I am humbled to celebrate a veteran actor, an icon, a legend in the Nollywood industry, a man whose voice echos with resounding vibration when he is on stage. A man who acts with every passion in him, dedicated and committed to ensure that the theme of any play he features in is well presented.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my favourite actor PETE EDOCHIE. A veteran actor. Come on now, you will agree with me already that he is an icon to be celebrated.
Pete Edochie is one of Nigeria’s most successful actors. The veteran actor who is seen as one of Africa’s most talented has amassed several movie awards to his name. Although a seasoned administrator and broadcaster, he came to limelight in the 1980s when he played the lead role of Okonkwo in an NTA adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s masterpiece novel, Things Fall Apart. He is a Christian, a devout member of the Roman Catholic Church.
Pete Edochie who is from the Igbo ethnic group is an indigene of Anambra State. He was born on March 7, 1947, in Enugu, Enugu State, Nigeria.
Pete Edochie had his primary and secondary Education in Zaria, Kaduna State of Nigeria. After his formal education, he worked with the Nigerian Railway Cooperation. Later, he went further to study a course in Journalism and Television in the School of Journalism and television in England.
Pete Edochie joined the Eastern Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (ENBC) in 1967 and in 1980; he was trained formally in the British Broadcasting Corporation as a broadcaster and started off as a junior programmes assistant after which he was elevated to the level of a Director.
Even though he was director of programmes, Pete Edochie, sometimes doubled as Deputy Managing Director and occasionally acting as Managing Director. He quit ABS (Note that ENBC became Radio Biafra during the Nigeria civil war, was renamed the East Central State Broadcasting ESBS after the civil war and was changed to Anambra Broadcasting Service with the creation of Anambra and Imo states in 1976) because the government decided to politicize the affairs of their FM station, thereby, resulting in the entire management being asked to move out, including him. He was to be the immediate successor to the MD but had to leave, moving into the movie industry.source
Pete already featured in Things fall apart, and had even won international award and recognition before his enrollment into Nollywood. The first time he went on stage was in 1962 at age 15 when he was a student at St. John’s College. He featured in the drama; Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare.
Thereafter, Edochie came into limelight after playing a leading role, Okonkwo in the 1980s NTA adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. As a result, BBC came to Nigeria to interview him, and he also got some international recognition. Edochie has also gone on to feature in movies such as Oduduwa (2000), Battle Line (2002), Rejection Son (2003), Set Up, Lost Kingdom, e.t.c.
