AFRICAN MUSIC: Authority Stealing by Fela Kuti

in nigeria •  6 years ago  (edited)

Fela Kuti is, perhaps, one of the greatest musicians to have come of out of Africa. While he may not have been popular in the Western world during his lifetime, Fela was a hero at home. Fela believed that music was a tool of social engineering, so he used his music to fight the oppressive governments at the time.

Music cannot be for enjoyment in Africa, it has to be for revolution.
Fela Kuti

In his remarkable track, Authority Stealing, Fela exposes the hypocrisy of a laughable system which jails and punishes petty thieves but frees white collar criminals like politicians. Fela tells his audience that while a petty criminal may, at best, only succeed in stealing a few thousands, white collar criminals may steal billions through manipulation of figures. Fela then concludes that the pen is deadlier than the gun.

Fela, therefore, calls on the society to have a rethink, to equally punish white collar criminals the same way petty thieves are being punished. However, beyond Fela's message, this track is held together with delicate, blending beats which delivers a delicious melody.

I am @gandhibaba, the young man who goes about carrying his magical pen, not his gun, in his pockets.

I love Fela Kuti and his awesome music, he has inspired many over the years, the afro-beat sound he invented with the help of the amazing Tony Allen's mesmerizing beats still stands the test of time, my particular favourites are:
Mattress, Coffin for head of state, ITT, Water no get enemy, Shakara, Gentlemen and so many more, and his work with Roy Ayres and Africa 70 etc, he was a talent for sure.

One of the greatest musicians of all time. It's a pity the younger generation did not get to appreciate the music of this icon during his time.

I am guessing that magical pen of yours must be touch screen enabled...lolx However, you did great with the article.
