Nickel Titanium (also known as Nitinol or NiTi) is in the unique class of shape memory alloys. A thermoelastic martensitic phase transformation in the material is responsible for its extraordinary properties. Nitinol alloys are typically made of 55%-56% Nickel and 44%-45% Titanium.
Small changes in composition can significantly impact the properties of the material. There are two primary categories of Nitinol. The first, known as “SuperElastic”, is characterized by extraordinary recoverable strains and kink resistance.
The second category, “Shape Memory” alloys, is valued for the Nitinol’s capacity to recover a pre-set shape when heated above its transformation temperature. The first category is often used for fishing.
Nitinol fishing wire is a superelastic alloy which can be stretched over ten times the length of ordinary steel leaders without permanent deformation. Any experienced angler knows the frustration of a kinked leader. Sometimes it seems like the steel leader is only good for one catch, after which the wire is out of commission from bends and kinks. No one wants to re-tie or change rigs on a rocking boat when you could be fishing! Now you can cast your bait back in the water and catch another! Dead straight memory wire.
Highly resistant to kinking.
Black Oxide finish.
Superelastic property that allows 5-10% elongation under extreme or sudden load. Returns to its’ original length without damage, giving a cushioning effect to connections and knots.
Resistant to tangling and wrapping itself round branches, ropes, railings etc.
Will not corrode. *Please check crimps, hooks, swivels, split rings and snaps every session.
Can be knotted or crimped. *Technically the 100lb and 66lb can be knotted but I highly recommend crimping these heavy gauges.
