The new generation D-Type heat sinks shown by Noctua to Computex 2019 are equipped with 7 heat pipes (instead of the 6 of the previous models) and provide a 400W dissipation capacity for the AMD Ryzen Threadripper TR4 model. The design of the heat pipes has been revised by Noctua, making it asymmetrical to facilitate the installation of the heat sink in those motherboards where the PCI Express slot is close to the CPU. In addition, the new design ensures compatibility with RAM modules up to a height of 65 mm (for the single fan design at least).
The new asymmetric design derives from that of the model NH-D15S and presents a different arrangement for the fins as well. There is less space than in the past and there is more space between each other to ensure more efficient air circulation.
The double fan version can be chosen by users with sufficient space. The heatsink is compatible with sockets AM4, LGA20xx, LGA115x and there is a variant of TR4 as expected. The ventilator should be used together with the thermal NT-H2 paste.
As Noctua at Computex demonstrated, the innovations enable the new system to deliver superior cooling performance compared to the previous model. A system with an AMD Threadripper processor with a 400 W TDP was running in a banquet and the Noctua heatsink version with a double fan was able to handle this situation easily. Of course, we are talking about prototypes, which are expected to arrive on the market in 2020.
Instead, another Noctua stand focused on a fully fanless system specifically designed for passive cooling and completely eliminating the noise from the sink. The goal is to manage TDP with silent fans up to 120 W in total lack of fan and up to 180 W. The asymmetric design of the previous model is also proposed again in this case. Availability for 2020 is planned.
