The word "normalize" has become rather common. I hear, and read it far too much I think.

I know that just about everybody who uses the word is well intended; but, to me, it says something negative about your thinking.

There are so many other words like tolerate, or accept, or love that could express a certain amount of reverence for the abnormal. Using the word "normalize" literally means that you want to normalize the abnormal. But, obviously, you only want to normalize certain abnormal things -- your favorite abnormal things.

No person with a functioning conscience thinks that only normal things can be tolerated, or accepted, or loved. It's hard to imagine how a person with a functioning conscience, who doesn't think that he or she is on a different, better, higher moral plane would think that normalization is the only way to get the masses to tolerate, or accept, or love the abnormal.

Yes, I come at this from the perspective of somebody who has a particular reverence for the abnormal. I think I'm rather odd, and I don't want to be normalized. I'm not looking for you to make the hold square just because I'm a square peg. Why would any abnormal person or persons want that?

You can't normalize greatness because, if our current concept of greatness became the norm, it would no longer be great. It's like the movie, The Incredibles, wherein the villain says that, "If everyone is super, then no one is super."

That's the thing, any abnormal person, thing, or behavior that you want to be "normalized" is something that you enjoy or revere. If it were to become normal, there would be no reason to enjoy or revere it.

The goal should be to promote a certain appreciation for eccentricity, not to absorb the eccentric into the borg of our normality.
