 Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, went dark overnight to let visitors and residents enjoy "the unforgettable opportunity to view the dancing lights of the Aurora Borealis. That’s great news for people who want to see the otherworldly lights. 

Though the city is smack in the middle of great Northern Lights viewing, it’s got enough light pollution to make viewing difficult unless you’re far enough away to catch the show. Since the city has streetlights and light from homes, aurora enthusiasts suggest you head at least a few miles outside the city if you want to see the lights in all their glory.

The city council released a statement saying street lights would be turned off in multiple sections of the city between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. local time, they also encouraged people to darken their homes, that everyone could watch the northern lights and they warning people to drive carefully.
