Hexadecimal facilitates the use of binary. For humans binary is tedious to work with, alternatively we use hexadecimal. The two by four rectangles are only spacers. So the top four squares that make up the top half of the rectangles are the zero boundaries or 0000. The bottom boundaries are 1111.
