Why does it matter if it's not backed by the Government?

Why does it matter if it's somewhat anonymous? Isn't that the point?

You seem misinformed. Just because BitCoin is used for illegal purposes does NOT mean it is illegal in itself.

    Agreed. I think gold and fiat currencies have been used for illegal purposes also. Ask the CIA... I'm sure they'll tell you.
