HP notebooks Ins/PrtSc design flaw

in notebook •  7 years ago  (edited)

Thanks to Steemit, by the end of this year I could become an owner of a new notebook computer. But the choice isn't so easy. It has to be small enough to fit into my photo bag, but has to have decent keyboard. Now, HP would be amongst the top choices if there wasn't…

All the HP notebooks I can find in my local stores has that tragic design choice on the joint Ins/PrtSc key — basic function is PrtSc, and Ins you can get only in combination with Fn key.

That is the most ridiculous design decision since the birth of QWERTY standard. At least, creators of QWERTY standard had an excuse why did the make it, but I never heard an official HP explanation why they stubbornly make their keyboards worst choice for anyone that have to type in text.

I have searched for the software solutions over the Internet. Couldn't believe the serviceman who said there isn't any. But he was right. There is no clean (BIOS) solution that could be used on any OS. There are few keyboard managers for Windows that can improve the situation, but not to swap functions cleanly. Haven't found anything for Linux.

Did you have similar problem? Did you solve it? Can you recommend a solution that I didn't found? Or at least recommend some other brand with a decent keyboard and small dimensions. It should be something similar to the good old Lenovo IdeaPad S205.

I have big 17" Acer with worse PrtSc Key, it shows many other thins on it such as sysro/syst and impr.

Yes, but on Acer you probably have a separate INS key, don't you? With a dedicated INS key I could easily forget about PrtSc key.

And thank you very much for that upgoat, my dear @mathworksheets 😊

Yes I do have separate INS key. Upgoat is just a little appreciation for your quality work my dear friend @ligheye. Will do it more in the future, specially for B.C. posts!!

I'm so glad I found this post. My first goal with Steemit is to obtain a laptop to use for Steemit, haha. That key functionality is terrible and I can't believe that no one has made, what I would think would be a simple program, to fix that situation or other like it. I'm gonna follow you right now, be sure to make a post when you do make the purchase. I think posts where users show what they were able to earn on the platform go a long way to show those who are a little less tech savvy and/or more skeptical about it that Steemit it actually works. Also, for those of us who don't doubt the platform and are already here, I just like seeing people providing good content and getting rewarded for it. Enjoy your weekend friend.

Thank you @sixersfeds.

Im sorry whats the problem here that ins and prnt scrn are the same key?

It's not the problem they are on the same key. Problem is that basic function is PrtSc and not Ins. It should be Ins, because that key is very commonly used when you type a text. PrtSc is used only on a rare occasions when you need Screen print.

Do you need it for coding? I never use that key and it used to drive me crazy because I didn't know it was on. I would never buy another Hp, structurally they feel flimsy. I was just looking at an HP Yoga 710 in a microsoft store and a salesman came up to me and told me it was was crap and the hinge joints wear out in a couple months. Back in the day every HP tower i owned had hardware failure searly on. Thats just my experience tho.

I need INS directly on that key for typing and navigating text. Coding, translating or anything else. I don't need PrtSc at all.

Your observation about flimsy cases oh the lower HP class is absolutely correct @quattrophoto.

Well the Yoga series was supposed to be high end and same with the Spectre they're all still shit, so pretty much they only make shit and sometimes bad rip offs of Macbooks

This is so helpful.

Thank you, @gabato

This is gold!

You've made it look effortless.

You've got an incredible gift.

Hmmm geting a decent external one? But that probably aint the solution for your problem:) I have surface pro. Never thought microsoft can make a good product, but i am surprised... Do not use insert or prntscr much at all, but even the detachable keyboard is a pleasure to use.

It should be good for a thou. But who has a thou, he goes to iMac.

Overpriced shit, no offence to anybody. I see those imac fanatic flaging me for the next two weeks now.

This is awe-inspiring.
