Major Storm! Internet and Power Outage Again

in novascotia •  7 years ago

The Nor'easter Yesterday...

Dumped tonnes of rain on us, we didn't have a flood in the basement though, so that was a huge plus!

IMG_3215.JPG

All that rain broke up the ice on the ocean, now low tide is starting to look pretty epic.

We lost power for a bit in the evening, and after 2 hours it came back on. We were sooo happy to be able to cook inside and have the house heat back up. The kids went to bed and all of the sudden the wind started howling worse than ever.

Branches and trees had to have been coming down everywhere, this storm was way more fierce than the one we had during Christmas. Brendan and I could barely sleep.

Sure enough we lost power and the internet. It's still not back on. I thought our house was going to blow over last night! It's still intact, a few shingles came off but no major damage. The chickens are okay too.

Above: The boys this morning in quickly cooling house, finding plenty to keep themselves occupied with, amazing in the 21st century, I know...I know...haha!!

There is another silver lining to the outage...I used a lot of vote power yesterday, so I've had it charging back up this whole time! In a few hours I'll be at 100%. That pretty much never happens to me, I'm not good at conserving. Sorry but you guys just post too much good shit!

Our house is freezing now, and with the really cold weather on its way tonight, we are over at Brendan's Parent's place. It's so toasty and warm here. They have power but no internet, if (God forbid) the power goes out here they have a wood stove and a generator. We're cooking a big meal and we brought enough stuff to stay here for days.

We even brought the guitars and bass box drum, Kiedis brought his flute, a great jam will happen later, I can't wait! I think @hendrix22 brought enough beer to get the job done and I have my 4:20. We have board games galore, I can't think of a better way to spend an outage! (UPDATE!! We finally have the internet back!) Now it's time to catch up on a few happenings and let the Jam begin! Hopefully the power comes back to our home by tomorrow! If not, I hope @marionbowes and Craig are prepared for a noisy house again haha!

That's the great thing about outages, they give you the opportunity to disconnect from devices and connect with the people around you. So many families sit around on devices not talking to each other these days it's sad. You guys are a great example of a 'Proper' family rarely seen these days, you do all sorts of stuff together and have a lovely dynamic.
I'm glad you came through the storm all well and good babe. Fingers crossed you won't get a flooded basement.
❤️❤️

Thank you TP, it was nice to unplug if even for a while. How are things out your way right now?? We're getting an arctic blast....-30..... I've never even seen those temps since moving to NS!!

Whoa that's cold!
Our weather is blah right now babe.
Drizzle and slightly cold...........Boring!!!

Power outage is becoming more of a blessing than a problem :) to a certain extent, hope you had a great time.

Thank you Phuzz!! <3 <3 You are such a sweet friend xoxo we are having a really great vacation at Brendan's parent's place!

Yay!! Safe and warm <3 and it sounds like so much fun....jammin! I wish we were there!
So glad the chicken babes are ok too. Woah, those big ice chunks on land are crazy! Must have been sooo much wind!! Enjoy the fam and your 420 <3 lots of love

The coolest part about the chunks is, they fit back together like a puzzle when the tide rises back up again! <3 <3

Are you all well dear @lyndsaybowes ? I think it should be a basic idea. your area is very danger. do you think about Spherical architecture? in this architecture, storm will like A breeze and you and sons do not feel the storm. If you need to know more, Ican explain that more in here or other seperate article for you. If you think this article can help you tell me to write it. This is a sad situation that worried us

I would love to read your article on spherical architecture!!

Crazy! I didnt realize the ice stayed when the tide went out. So cool....

thank you dear @lyndsaybowes for your contents. is the storm be calm down?

The chickens are okay .. This is the most important thing for me... hehehh

Sometimes blessings come in the most odd forms. I have missed my salty dogs these past few weeks being away in Ontario. So glad we had power and could provide heat and comfort in this deep freeze. No one can survive in this cold without heat. Sad how we rely on our modern day lives to keep us going. Off grid makes more sense each year. I have seen way to many storms over the past 5 years that are becoming more and more destructive. Thank god for our BBQ, wood stove and generator. I love those pictures of our little cove. Always beautiful in summer and winter. Just not sitting on it drinking wine today. lol :)))

Thank God for Oma and Opa <3 <3 We love you guys so much and it was really great to spend these days together! <3 <3 <3

Ah man this sounds like a proper adventure!! Right up my street :D. Games, beer, 420 and food .. what more do you need lol (I want to come to a Bowes party :D ) In a way it must be nice to unplug for a while and get back to basics? A part of me dreams about living in a log cabin in he woods with no electricity, a self sustaining lifestyle .. but hey that's just me ;)

That said I'mreally glad you guys are safe and warm and both the house and chickens are all good. Much love to you @lyndsaybowes

The log cabin is in our life goals too :) I hope all of your dreams come true, hopefully steem can make it so!!!!!

Glad you guys are ok and didnt flood or sustain any damage to your home, chickens etc.

I would love to hear a Bowes family jam!

One day we shall all jam together Michael! :) :) :)

Oh that is so on my wish list! You dont have a bass player so that would be my contribution

We Need YOU!!

I will seriously come to NS to visit you guys this summer. Dont tease me LB!

I speak for us all when I say we'd LOVE that!!

Ok. I am going to Philly in May and will tie it in! Fuck yes!

YAY!!!! There's a ferry from Maine to NS!!

We have not lost our power yet (knock on virtual wood) but the temps have really dropped and the wind! It is battering our old Toad Hall tonight and the windchill is negative zeros. We are told Monday we shall see mid 40s F, but I'll believe that when I see it. I moved the quail closer before the storm and yesterday was up to my ankles in the spot where they are closer to the house. Today I could have skated to them, instead I slid slowly on my wellies to their hungry mouths. I guess we cold North Easterners are just built of stuff to take the cold. It sounds as if you are having a good time of it tho! I wish we could have been a fly on the wall of your jam sessions! Keep warm and safe!

I'm so glad to hear everything is going okay over there so far and the feathered family is good too! I hope it warms up soon and the winds calm down, this is the worst January I've ever seen out here!

I am so glad your house is doing okay in the storm. Does this type of storm occur often during winter time up there? There are so many ices in your backyard ocean. I guess it's useless for a boat during winter time.

Our area of the cove is not good for boating in the winter, no, but on other parts of the water it's fine :) The fishermen work in all the worst weather...they really have hard jobs here!

Beautiful Lyndsay, it's like the fun just started, power outage or not, internet or not, storms or not, you guys create fun everywhere.

The Halifax boardwalk photo and video coverage of the storm were amazing.

I look forward to experiencing off grid life. Even with the challenges of nature, it looks beautiful out there

I wouldn't wanna be anywhere else <3 <3 I <3 NS!!

Are those blocks of ice from your backyard ocean? Really epic. I have only seen blocks that thick in a huge freezer / refrigerator. Well, I am glad you have a place where you can stay safer. Have a wonderful time.

Yeah, the ocean froze and now it's leaving behind it's upper layer on the shore as the tide goes down :) It's pretty unique!

I'm so glad you guys have a safe place to go in a storm.

What do you do to keep the pipes from freezing? That's our biggest worry if we lose power for an extended period.

If it were to get that bad, we would call the landlord and he would have to bring a generator over and hook up some heaters to it, thankfully we haven't had to deal with that yet!

Oh good. Being in Canada your pipes were probably routed a lot better than ours. Some of them are so close to the outer walls that they freeze in hours.

Stay toasty!

Omg that's effin cray cray!!!

It's good that you had already arranged some food stuff. As the warning which was giving to the city by your official website. Everything happened according to their website. I was praying for the city happiness. But the good thing is it that everything is ok there. I am getting capture in this blog that you had fun in your lows house. These walk are not like pasts. I hope this bad weather will go soon, and again i'll read your positive walk. I am waiting of your positive walks and excited to visit your walk. But the walks of in now days is a great update of your city and your.

Have a good day! Take care of yourself.

It is a good that you have a safe place to hunker down. The ocean looks menacing with those large chunks of ice. If the tide comes in high or you have a storm surge will you be safe where you are and will your house be okay? The chickens are safe and that brings some peace of mind. Stay safe and hopefully the storm will be over soon.

The worst is behind us, and all will be well <3 We live pretty far in a cove, the flooding comes from the frozen ground, and the rain gets into the cracks of the basement. <3 <3 Thanks for caring Ceci!

It's great to see how you didn't lose heart in this situation and indeed you found a way to have fun all together!

Yeah and we decided to extend our visit here!! It's getting really cold now and so windy, so we are here snuggled in for another day/night <3 <3 Hugs Miti!!

You certainly will not be quite bored, there! And please call me Carlo ;-)

I'd be honoured to, thanks Carlo <3 xo

so sorry about the storm, and Im happy that you guys could control the situation, and all are safe :)) even chickens :)))
that music jam must be one of the bests!
❤️ to Bowes Family

Love and Peace to you Davood, I hope everything is okay where you are. Feel free to send me a message on Discord...

i am happy to see that you are safe , stay calm and stay in peace, i wish your life brings alot of happiness and peace

Thank you very much @ailsamoon! xo

The photos you take of the ocean never cease to amaze me. I've only seen the ocean a few times in my life. Glad everyone survived the storm, sounds scary! Been some pretty crazy winds up on the mountain here too, the barn actually blew over one day, luckily we were able to rebuild it with measures to prevent that from happening again and the cool part was winching the roof back on, wish I took video/photo but we were battling daylight. Awesome, kids don't even seem to bothered by the lack of power. Hehe I'm not good at conserving either apparently, went crazy today now that I have all these steem thanks to @wwf & @fulltimegeeks <3 So much interesting posts here! Nothing like sifting through all crapola on facebook xD Could you obtain a propane heater? Might be a good backup but I believe I recall your plans to get a woodstove that's the best! Nothing beats wood heat. When I look back to all the times I've had to go without power I appreciate it for those reasons; music and fun times focused on being with people. ^_^

Right on! Congrats on your delegations! xoxoxoxo Yea we're working on getting a chimney and then the wood stove, it's gonna be a life saver, kicking ourselves by not doing it in the previous years. That's incredible about your barn, I'm so glad it's all back together!

Beautiful shots as always. You live in such a naturally stunning place. Looking forward to more posts and keep Steeming. :)

Although we don't suffer from cold over here, we do somtimes get high winds and we hate that yhe most, can't imagine living in a wooden house at least we won't ever get blown away.

Yes, those white brick homes are the finest!!

Looking at the your photos makes me want to put all my winter clothes on!

brrrrrrrrr!

It was over 40° celsius at my place yesterday, not so hot today, only about 21° and cloudy.
I feel cold just looking at your photos.
I hope you got video of the jam that you can share
♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ ♭ 🎤 🎹 🎸 Rock on & stay warm.

Omg 40 C!! That is some intense heat!! I do have a little video of a jam.... <3 <3

Yes, it is pretty warm when the thermometer gets up that high.
Thankfully it was a single day at that temp this time.
We've had a week of days all being over 40° in recent years, and they were tough, even the air conditioners struggle with the heat that high.
Looking forward to the jam video 😉

What a trouble ...
I hardly understand what it feels like, for the first time in my life I've just experienced an earthquake last 2 weeks, It was 5.2 Richter and I for the first time saw panic and public trouble...but this post of yours shows something more serious..
Take care o your self
@bitpost

Oooh I'm so sorry to hear about the disaster in your area! Was everyone ok?

Yeah... I have a post here on steemit I wrote right after the earthquake...describing what people do instead of safety measures...
and btw... 5.2 Richter is not that destructive tho...but yours was quite a disaster...

I just did a storm post and mentioned you because I showed a pic of Peggy's Cove. Glad you're ok and hope things return to normal soon! I was lucky and never lost power

Yeah you spoiled Halifaxian!! AHHAHAAA!!!! I'm going to check out your post, thanks for letting me know!

This place is beautiful ... i love winters because in my country summers are very very hot( 45- 48 degree celsius)...but internet & power gone due to storm this is not good thing.

LOL!! HAHAHA I love it! Vincent Vega.

vincent vega loves you too

HAHA nice!

It is nice to have a wood stove in the house. I used to visit an old man and he really knew how to get the most out of his wood stove. He told me he used the dampers a certain way that he only used one piece of wood for the day and one piece of wood for the night. When I would visit him I couldn't believe how warm the place was cause of his wood stove. I still can't believe how he can do it with 2 pieces of wood a day.

Wow...that is a skill!!

Glad to hear you all are ok. That storm looked like it was a doozy!

Thank you Dr! There were some pretty wild photos of the damages!!

I’m glad everyone is safe. I’ve never seen anything like that with the low tide.

I'm happy to show you something you have never seen before, cool!

That’s the perfect time to roll out the alcohol. No better way to get warm
without heat!

HAAH!! You nailed it!!

Vodka sure makes you feel warm real quick. Whiskey works, too!

Wow what a great post. I do love extreme weather. It gets adrenaline pumping and brings people together in various ways. So glad your house held up and the chickens are okay.... just a few ruffled feathers Even outages can be fun and you lovely shiny people always seem to be happily weathering the happenings -. Great photos and wow that ice! Have an awesome jam - sounds most warming to the spirit. Great final photo of Brendan - you have a knack @lyndsaybowes. Stay warm real and happy - love you all☀️🌈🌴⭐️🦋🔥

We're sending our love to you in Costa Rica <3 <3 <3 Thanks so much for all the good vibes you send our family xoxo

Aww you sweetie - like attracts like ☺️🌈🦋☀️💛

Glad y'all are okay.. those are some huge ice chunks from the ocean..

I haven't seen 100% voting power in a month lol.. even going to San Antonio for 2 days..

The weather definitely looks better at the in laws house.. plus a wood stove... toasty..

Loving life at B's parents!! Just about to have some nice brunch!

I love brunch...

That still means blunts for lunch in Canada right..

That broken up ice is unlike anything I have ever seen! How interesting!

That is so crazy! Glad to hear the electricity is back and that everyone including the hens and James Bond is ok! Sending cozy vibes your way!

Power is back here! Though it just flickered again. Bah. Glad you all made out okay. Lovely pics at the GrandBowes's :)

Oooh yay!!! That means the house will be nice and warm by the time we get home :) So glad it's back on for you guys!!!!!!!

I don't mind too much when it goes out :) Just Dor's anxiety about out "never coming baaaaack" is a little hard. Otherwise, playing games and doing puzzles and trying to be musical is a good time to me!

The wind is still going crazy hey! I think we're not out of the woods yet!

So crazy! It's flipping coooold wind now too. I'm telling the chickens to stay inside but who knows if they'll listen...
