#nowplaying week 18: “Chick bands” that have influenced me

in nowplaying •  7 years ago  (edited)

Ok, so these aren’t necessarily complete “chick bands”, but rather just some badass bands that just so happen to include some badass females! ;)

Last night, I went to play some music and practice for an upcoming show with my band. I play guitar and sing with 3 of my best guy-friends (one of them being my brother) Those that know me, know that I’m usually a little bashful when I get behind the guitar and the microphone. Im often told to “Get closer to the mic!” Or “Stop turning your guitar down!” But last night, I was a little flustered after a rough day and just belted it out. And it felt good!

That got me to thinking about some of my influences as “kind-of” musician ;) So now I’m sitting here on my porch playing some of my favorite tunes that really fueled me to step up and start playing music!

First up: Imelda May!

I first heard of Imelda in an actual print mag called “Rockabilly Magazine”. My husband bought me a subscription as a gift and I looked her up on YouTube after reading the article. I love all of her stuff but this is one of my favorites from her first album:

Next, a 90s punk rock classic: Tilt!

I bought my first Tilt album in a pawn shop when I was around 17 years old and it hit me like a ton of bricks! Not surprisingly, the lead singer’s stage name is “Cinder” Block ;) This was the first time in my life I had ever heard someone simultaneously sing with such beauty and grit. Hands down one of my favorite albums of all time.

One of my greatest influences over the years has been The Creepshow. I first starting listening to them when a friend suggested their MySpace Page way back in the day. ;) The first album was fronted by Jen Blackwood, and was later replaced by her sister Sarah after she left the band. Sarah is also a huge inspiration to me! Some of you may know her from the popular band, Walk off the Earth, who claimed their fame on YouTube.

And last but not least, another MySpace find from my days of avid music-listening: Devil Doll, fronted by the lovely and talented Colleen Duffey

There are so many more bands that have made a huge impact on me over the years, but I should probably tone it down now for this post :) Until the next time!

Thanks for checking it out!
