Anybody under 50 who disses Jimmy Carter's administration doesn't know what they're talking about. Because they weren't there. Although, in hindsight he did make a number of mistakes. Trump believes, or so he stated, that returning the Panama Canal to Panama cost him the election more than the Iranian Hostage "Crisis" with no mention of the "October Surprise." If you're reading the history from a book you're at the mercy of those who control what goes in that book. But we'll go no further. This is an intro, not a biography. Plus, the knowledge of your humble scribe isn't top notch, not being privy to any behind the scenes tricks of the era. Plus, I was a teen when this went down.
I also wanted to bring this up so I could introduce the word "zeitgeist" which many people lazily define as "national spirit" or something like that. That definition will due, but what it really means is the spirit (geist/ghost/spirit/breath) of the (zeit) time(s). Zeitgeist in its purest form isn't limited to a single nation. For example, there's a global zeitgeist that is characterized by anxiety. We can only guess at these examples; but Ukrainians are anxious about the war. Israelis are anxious about retaliation. Palestinians are anxious about being exterminated. Americans are anxious about the next four years of Trump. Trump is anxious about catching a bullet. Think, trickle down anxiety.
