And both appear to be at least technically guilty of the crimes they were charged with (although in Trump's case, even the alleged victims denied being victims).
But I sincerely believe New York Attorney General Letitia James did not simply become aware of potential misdeeds and conclude that an investigation was necessary. She appears to have set her sights on targeting conservative political leaders/organizations and then finding a crime to charge them with.
So liberals who are happy to see Trump and Lapierre convicted should temper their enthusiasm with some contemplation of the danger to democracy of having a heavily politicized system of justice, how hard it is to ensure that the administration of justice does not fall into the hands of highly partisan individuals, and how dangerous it is to applaud and normalize this.
