With
the recent increase of posts with NSFW content, a debate is flaring up about various concerns related to this. It is a serious issue for mass adoption.
There needs to be filtering but deleting, banning and other strategies won't work with the architecture of the system, and there is several approaches that could work.
Just because we don't want to shut down conversations doesn't mean we want them in our face, or to have them "represent" us either.
Obviously we can't do much in respect of the latter, since even before this, competing established social media has been surreptitiously downranking links to here already. The fakenews and post-truth campaigns have just started, and we can expect some of the flak from this.
And let's face it, there would be a lot of interested readers and writers to populate a haven for them here, and they would also bring readers and investors.
But there needs to be fences and filters or it will gain nothing when we lose others by letting them put boobies and such especially in trending and hot.
I doubt that NSFW content is very likely to get massively upvoted.
And, well, I guess if some users who think "there oughta be a law" really, sooner or later they were going to leave...
What has already been discussed about solutions to this? What about other options?
Firstly, @ned and others have talked about creating a system of renting names for various purposes, and one obvious application of this is to create curated views filtered to cater to a market segment.
I have also suggested a system of NSFW ranking with voluntary and community voting to produce rankings that hide or deprecate content at the discretion of the user, and enabled by default at some threshold.
There could be also a system of proving you are legally allowed to see such content without a centralised authority, indeed, this has other uses also, related to future possibilities of marketplaces, where some types of products can be hidden from users without this certification.
It is important to point out that Steem is designed to be all inclusive. Ironically for some this means they will shun Steem.
Some people believe that "offensive" content leads to crime and decadence. They can never be pleased and it is their naivete that led them on here while not considering the open system cannot stop this use.
I love this song...
But some people don't. Is this offensive to the average person? Probably not. Most people can see the irony and humour in it. Probably most people simply think it is teenager grade nonsense.
Can you say with a straight face that people in general want to see snuff or pedo porn?
Really?
Most people didn't even want to watch Isis "beheading" videos. I sucked it up and watched one just so I knew what the fuss was about. It was highschool grade and worse than B grade special effects.
So a heavy handed response is counterproductive.
A voluntary system with a voting system including anti-abuse features, would allow simple filtering to mark content.
A system of verifying the age of a user that does not require any single third party but rather a network of certifiers, with a method of flagging false "this user is an adult" votes...
It is no big deal, really, and if you think it is, then you will not like post beta Steem. Freedom means some danger. But seriously, what kind of sicko is going to think it is open slather here.
This is how it would be for posters of snuff, torture or pedo porn:
Update
This post got a big vote or two, and then suddenly they were withdrawn. See this screencap:
It made me suspicious but I read since that nsfw as first tag has a "bug" causing them to be hidden. Obviously since this post is hidden from even my own login view of my blog, I have to concede it must be a bug.

Just some quick thoughts:
There is a difference between nudity and porn. Large grey area, but still.
If Steemit is for 13 years old and over, and you allow porn without further measures, you open yourself to prosecution in most countries in the world.
Who is going to check if the porn shown on Steemit involves people of legal age?
Many people don't want to see porn here, so it might be a good idea to be able to mute based on category.

or even if some moron makes you want to smash the screen when they weigh their crap in in a discussion?
haha.
Well, I was saying way back, that blocking users was needed. Now suddenly everyone wants blocking topics.
In panic #nsfw is now disappeared. I think it is a good move. But now everyone realise subjective blocking is needed for all of our sakes.
The schadenfreude I feel. Why did nobody realise open does not mean no user filters?
Idealism.
So it is forgivable. Now we can have a proper discussion about it.
Censorship is not the same as I don't want to see it.
