Camões

Camões is considered one of the greatest figures of lusophone literature and one of the great poets of the western tradition like Shakespeare.

Camões wrote the epic work The Lusiads, Os Lusíadas (Wikipedia link) and the influence of this masterpiece, is so profound that Portuguese language is usually called the "language of Camões".

Some said about Camões's eye that because of a frustrated love, he self-exiled in Africa, enlisted as military, where it lost an eye in battle.
